We were so excited when our new books arrived at school! It was almost like Christmas!\r\n\r\nI feel that the opportunity to read, enjoy and relate with the writings of Shakespeare is such a central part of the high school experience. Many of my students struggle with reading, however, which makes reading the original text such a difficult (and not very enjoyable) experience. This is why the graphic and illustrated texts are so important! \r\n\r\nThe illustrations in these books make the text come alive and increase my student's engagement with literature. This has opened the door for all of us to read and learn together in powerful ways.\r\n\r\nWith this book, my students are practicing essential literacy skills such as identifying main ideas, making predictions, and describing characters and settings. The story also gives them many opportunities to build vocabulary and practice speaking and writing in English. For example, we use echo reading, partner reading, and role-play to bring the characters to life and strengthen both comprehension and language fluency.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is active and collaborative. Students ask each other questions, use sentence frames to share ideas, and connect the story to their own experiences of adapting to new places and challenges.\r\n\r\nSeveral students have really connected with Roz, the robot who learns to survive in a new environment. Like Roz, many of my students are adjusting to life in a new culture and language, and they are inspired by her resilience and creativity. One student shared, \"Roz is like me—I'm learning new things every day to fit in.\" Moments like this show just how meaningful these books have become.\r\n\r\nThank you for giving my students the chance to grow as readers and to see themselves reflected in literature. These texts are doing so much more than filling our shelves—they're opening doors for students to grow as readers, thinkers, and confident learners.\r\n\r\nWith these books, my students are practicing key literacy skills like comprehension, vocabulary development, and fluency. They're also learning how to compare ideas across two languages, which strengthens both their English and their home language. For example, when we read side-by-side texts, students build connections between familiar words and new ones, making English learning less intimidating and more empowering.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading now looks like small groups leaning in around a book, students echo-reading aloud with a partner, or quietly flipping pages during independent reading time. The bilingual books give students the courage to take risks—because when they encounter a tricky word in English, they can check the meaning in their home language and keep going.\r\n\r\nSome students who were once hesitant to pick up a book are now the first to choose one from the shelf. One of my newcomers, who used to shy away from reading in front of others, now proudly volunteers to read aloud because she understands the story in both languages. Another student loves to share bilingual picture books with friends, showing how words look in Spanish and English. These moments remind us how powerful representation and access can be.\r\n\r\nYour support has created not just a library, but a bridge—helping students feel proud of who they are while giving them the tools to succeed in a new language.
