One of my students arrived in tears, but quickly found comfort by lying on our classroom rug, gently running his hands across its texture. This simple moment was a powerful reminder that students who are nonverbal often communicate their needs and emotions in ways that speak louder than words.\r\n\r\nThe addition of comfortable chairs has created a welcoming space where both students and teachers can sit without discomfort, making the area truly inviting. Our new rotating bookshelf has also been especially impactful, allowing students to independently browse and select the books they would like read aloud. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we now have a dedicated sensory-friendly corner furnished with soft seating and fabrics that feel like satin and silk. This calming environment provides our students with a sense of security and comfort, helping them transition more smoothly and feel supported throughout the school day. The round rug has quickly become a favorite, particularly for our students with high sensory needs, offering both comfort and reassurance. Our STEM building and construction toys have also been a wonderful addition. While students experience them as fun opportunities to create animals or imaginative structures, these materials are also helping them strengthen fine motor skills, practice color and shape recognition, engage in letter matching, and build problem-solving skills—all while fostering creativity and exploration.\r\n\r\nThese resources have provided our students with safe, engaging, and developmentally supportive ways to learn and grow.\r\nThank you for your generosity. Your support has made a meaningful impact in our classroom, giving our students the tools, environments, and opportunities they need to thrive.\r\n\r\nThe most beautiful part of teaching is creating a classroom that feels like home—a place where students feel safe, comfortable, and so connected that they don't want to leave. For this I thank you, and we thank you, because without your support our classroom would not be the safe and inspiring space it has become. Your generosity has given our students the comfort and opportunities that make learning a joyful experience, as well as the resources they need to feel secure, engaged, and excited to grow each day.","fullyFundedDate":1746786272635,"projectUrl":"project/help-me-give-nonverbal-students-their-vo/9147795/","projectTitle":"Help Me Give Nonverbal Students Their Voice","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. G","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9832902_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1741319886254","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9832902"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_15054","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":247,"numTeachers":23,"percentFrplEligible":61,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":3,"percentWhite":58,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":36,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"10.7:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_REMOTE"},"inStateSupporters":40.9,"schoolId":15054,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Wellington Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Wellington Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/texas/wellington-independent-school-district/wellington-elementary-school/15054"}
