Many of the books also expose students to new topics and perspectives, which helps them grow not only as readers, but as thinkers.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is an active and exciting part of the day. With The Chronicles of Narnia, Percy Jackson, and The One and Only series now on our shelves, reading time has become one of the most anticipated parts of our day. These stories have opened new doors for my students—not just into magical worlds and heroic quests, but into lessons about courage, friendship, empathy, and imagination. Through these texts, we've been working on essential reading skills like identifying themes, analyzing character development, and drawing connections between the fantasy worlds of the books and our own real-world experiences. Students are learning how authors use symbolism and point of view to convey deeper meaning, and they're practicing how to support their opinions with evidence from the text—a skill that builds both literacy and confidence.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading is no longer a quiet, solitary task; it's a shared adventure. We hold small-group discussions where students debate whether Edmund from Narnia is truly a villain or just misunderstood, or whether Percy's flaws make him a more relatable hero. During read-alouds, I often pause and ask students to predict what will happen next or to visualize the settings—sometimes they even sketch scenes from the books to capture their mental images. Many of my reluctant readers have discovered that reading can be fun when the stories speak to their imaginations. For example, one student who used to avoid chapter books now rushes to our reading corner to grab The One and Only Ivan, eager to share his thoughts about Ivan's kindness and courage with his classmates.\r\n\r\nThese books have also created an inclusive community of readers. Some of my students identify deeply with Percy's feelings of not fitting in, while others connect with the quiet strength of characters like Stella from The One and Only Ruby. They're realizing that heroes come in many forms—and that their own voices matter, too. Watching them swap books, recommend favorite scenes, and even write their own \"next adventures\" has been one of the greatest joys of this project.\r\n\r\nBecause of you, my students aren't just learning to read—they're learning to love reading. Thank you for helping them see themselves in stories, explore new worlds, and discover the power of words to inspire and connect us all.","fullyFundedDate":1757697902751,"projectUrl":"project/fun-reading-to-entertain/9683535/","projectTitle":"Fun Reading to Entertain","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Eddins","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-6_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7813650"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_15787","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":304,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":44,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":24,"percentWhite":63,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":8,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"US Census Data for the surrounding geographic area","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"Census ZCTA","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_REMOTE"},"inStateSupporters":17.3,"schoolId":15787,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Timpson Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Timpson Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/texas/timpson-independent-school-district/timpson-elementary-school/15787"}
