Reading in my classroom looks like students asking for more rigor and new texts, and having a generous amount of August Wilson has been a great way to do this! They are reading and engaging with the story of Troy and Rose and Corey, and today we are about to head to a local theater to see the live performance of Fences. \r\n\r\nPablo says it is the best play he's ever read. Ismael says that it makes him think about how the past intrudes on the present. And Santi wants to see how the actors and actresses are going to portray these characters onstage. \r\n\r\nThank you for allowing us to do this deep dive into August Wilson and one of the most important plays of all-time. In particular, students have loved the books that transport medieval Scotland into a modern day high school where Macbeth and Lady Macbeth rule the social order. In all instances, the students are revisiting the classic text, studying it, and cementing its themes and movements in their minds.\r\n\r\nIn my class, reading looks like students opting in to reading something of their own choosing. For many of them, Shakespeare was intimidating but no more! They understand the plot and the rhythms, so now they are enjoying seeing how other authors play with the themes and familiar ideas of the play. \r\n\r\nJeffrey loves Manga and Graphic Novels, so he has been thrilled by these reimaginings. Alejandro usually does not connect with the books we read, but he is 30 pages into one of the Remixes that is set in modern day and couldn't put it down. \r\n\r\nThank you for making this reading possible for my students. These two novellas in particular are very powerful and Rita Hayworth is approximately 100 pages, meaning that they seem more accessible to a struggling and emerging reader.\r\n\r\nAdditionally, I have found that some of the boys in my room who struggle with reading have really connected with these stories, and I have even found success with some of the students that I taught last year coming back and asking to borrow these books. Julian and Fidel are both such students, and they have checked out The Long Walk in particular because of seeing the recent movie that came out last fall. Reading for them is just finding a really interesting story that they like! I want to encourage them to keep doing this.\r\n\r\nLifelong love of reading does not just happen. For me, it was inspired by my dad reading Stephen King novels on the train to work, and now, I get to pass that inspiration along--with your help--to the next generation of readers.
