These books showed up, and I already have students reading them independently because of their high interest in August Wilson and the worlds that he creates. His plays focus on communities and families, and my students relate instantly to his characters and their struggles. I am able to teach my high school juniors about a playwright's style because I have so many different examples now for them to read. \r\n\r\nReading in my classroom looks like students picking up books that look interesting to them, and now August Wilson is on their radar because of our work with Fences. We went to see Fences at a local theater in April, so now many students want to read more plays by this playwright to learn more about his storytelling. I have students currently reading these August Wilson plays right now as I write this. \r\n\r\nIsmael especially is now an August Wilson afficionado, and thank you for helping me give him the books that he craves as he is starting his journey through the ten-play cycle of plays that define August Wilson's literary legacy. \r\n\r\nThank you for making this possible and for supporting public educators.","fullyFundedDate":1778278828698,"projectUrl":"project/august-wilson-renaissance-studying-amer/10213507/","projectTitle":"August Wilson Renaissance: Studying America's Shakespeare","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Sheridan","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp134489_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1463947845016","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mr-sheridan"},{"teacherId":134489,"projectId":10156156,"letterContent":"Thank you for supporting my work as a public educator this year through this project that brought 20 copies of August Wilson's seminal play Fences into my classroom library. In April, students read The Color Purple, and many have continued their deep study into Black communities, identity, and the power of family.\r\n\r\nReading in my classroom is both in-class and independently outside of class. So many students took copies of Fences home and read them over a weekend. I had students like Ismael who read Fences straight through after State Testing, finishing it in one sitting!\r\n\r\nThese new books informed so many students' understanding of the deeper themes of how families love and hurt each other in so many ways. We were able to go see Fences performed two weeks ago, and that inspired even more students to read the play and learn more about Troy and Corey and Rose. The play is one of the most powerful ones that I have ever read, and by purchasing these books for my classroom library, you are making memories for my students. \r\n\r\nThank you so much.","fullyFundedDate":1773831339281,"projectUrl":"project/build-more-fences-connecting-august-wi/10156156/","projectTitle":"Build More Fences! The artwork was perfect for a first grade read-a-loud, and the voices that my students came up with while reading were incredible! We enjoyed our time and are already planning on coming back next year for a monthly reading program--Reading Explorers--that connect our two campuses on a regular basis through literature! \r\n\r\nThe books created memories for both sets of students, and the high school students in particular were very moved by seeing how enthusiastic the younger students were about meeting them and reading with them. These resources allow students to access grade-level texts while still honoring and leveraging their home language. With the dictionaries, students are learning how to translate unfamiliar words, compare meanings across languages, and better understand nuances such as context, multiple meanings, and academic vocabulary. This has strengthened key literacy skills like comprehension, vocabulary acquisition, and language transfer. Instead of feeling stuck when they encounter challenging words, students now have a reliable tool that empowers them to independently make meaning and stay engaged in their learning.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading has become more interactive, inclusive, and confidence-building. Students actively use their translating dictionaries during reading and writing, pausing to look up words, annotate texts, and discuss translations with peers. I've seen students who were once hesitant to participate now eagerly contributing because they feel more supported. One of my newcomer students, for example, has been especially excited, using the dictionary daily to build connections between Spanish and English and proudly sharing new vocabulary with the class. These dictionaries are not just tools, they are bridges that help students access content, build confidence, and see their bilingualism as a strength.","fullyFundedDate":1766462195851,"projectUrl":"project/empower-bilingual-learners/9887277/","projectTitle":"Empower Bilingual Learners","teacherDisplayName":"Dr. Vargas","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-10_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10347339"},{"teacherId":134489,"projectId":10130836,"letterContent":"Thank you. Reading in my classroom looks like students asking for more rigor and new texts, and having a generous amount of August Wilson has been a great way to do this! They are reading and engaging with the story of Troy and Rose and Corey, and today we are about to head to a local theater to see the live performance of Fences. \r\n\r\nPablo says it is the best play he's ever read. In all instances, the students are revisiting the classic text, studying it, and cementing its themes and movements in their minds.\r\n\r\nIn my class, reading looks like students opting in to reading something of their own choosing. For many of them, Shakespeare was intimidating but no more! They understand the plot and the rhythms, so now they are enjoying seeing how other authors play with the themes and familiar ideas of the play. \r\n\r\nJeffrey loves Manga and Graphic Novels, so he has been thrilled by these reimaginings.
