We use the new materials during small-group instruction, Tier 2 interventions, and guided reading rotations. One powerful moment I see often is when a student who once guessed at words now slowly blends each syllable, pauses, and proudly reads the word aloud with confidence.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, my students were excited and curious. They immediately wanted to explore the cards, boards, and manipulatives, and many asked if we could start using them right away. For students who have struggled with reading in Spanish, seeing words broken down into clear, manageable syllables made reading feel possible—and less intimidating—for the first time.\r\n\r\nBy supporting this project, you gave my students more than reading tools—you gave them confidence as emerging bilingual readers. The next steps include increasing reading fluency and accuracy by moving from syllable blending to reading complete words and short texts independently. As we continue working on comprehension and writing in Spanish, these resources will remain essential in helping students grow into confident, capable readers who believe in themselves.\r\n\r\nThank you for helping us build strong Spanish readers, one syllable at a time.","fullyFundedDate":1767465301948,"projectUrl":"project/building-strong-spanish-readers-one-syl/9965202/","projectTitle":"Building Strong Spanish Readers, One Syllable at a Time","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Salazar","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10387808_orig.jpg?crop=1066,1066,x0,y387&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1766022773268","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/salazar33"},{"teacherId":10387808,"projectId":9965133,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generous support, my students now have access to calming tools that are used every single day in our classroom. We use the flexible seating options, calming corner materials, and sensory tools during morning arrival, transition times, independent work, and moments when students need support regulating their emotions. One of our favorite moments is during our daily check-in, when students choose a calming strategy before beginning academic work—this helps them start the day focused and ready to learn.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, my students were beyond excited. They immediately noticed how welcoming and peaceful the classroom felt. Many of them expressed how the new tools helped them feel \"calm,\" \"safe,\" and \"happy.\" Some students who previously struggled with staying seated or managing big emotions now independently choose a calming tool and return to learning more quickly and confidently.\r\n\r\nBy contributing to this project, you gave my students more than materials—you gave them skills. The next steps for my students include continuing to build self-regulation and independence by learning when and how to use these tools appropriately. As we move forward with reading, writing, and math lessons, these resources allow students to stay engaged longer, collaborate more positively, and develop lifelong strategies for emotional awareness and self-control.\r\n\r\nThank you for helping create a classroom where calm bodies truly lead to ready learners.","fullyFundedDate":1766530098098,"projectUrl":"project/calm-bodies-ready-to-learn/9965133/","projectTitle":"Calm Bodies, Ready to Learn","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Salazar","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10387808_orig.jpg?crop=1066,1066,x0,y387&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1766022773268","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/salazar33"},{"teacherId":9133552,"projectId":7603196,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous support two years ago. Technology is a big part of how young students build early literacy skills, and having their own headphones allows them to focus during read-alouds, phonics lessons, and academic games without outside distractions. Many of our families aren't familiar with how these tools support early reading, but in the classroom, they help scholars hear letter sounds clearly, follow along with stories, and practice skills at their own pace.\r\n\r\nThe students were immediately excited about the headphones. Before, they would often ask, \"Why can't we listen to books like the older kids?\" Now they can—and their faces light up every time we pull out the devices. The independence the headphones give them is a big deal for this age. They love choosing a story on their tablet, listening closely, and then talking about what they learned.\r\n\r\nA couple of students have especially connected with the new technology. One scholar who normally struggles to stay focused during reading has been able to sit for much longer periods because the audio keeps him engaged. Another student who is still building confidence in English has been using the read-alouds to hear vocabulary modeled clearly, and it's showing in her participation. These small but meaningful moments are happening every day, and they're possible because you believed in our classroom. Thank you for giving our scholars the tools they need to grow.","fullyFundedDate":1531269541564,"projectUrl":"project/me-too-please/3363480/","projectTitle":"Me Too, Please.","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Palacios","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp5401085_orig.jpg?crop=1261,1261,x455,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1723778617097","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/5401085"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_110481","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":344,"numTeachers":28,"percentFrplEligible":84,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":3,"percentWhite":9,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":84,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"12.3:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":68.8,"schoolId":110481,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Wayside Altamira Academy on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Wayside Altamira Academy","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/texas/texas-department-of-education/wayside-altamira-academy/110481"}
