Your generosity has provided my students with much more than a new novel to read. You have given them an opportunity to experience literature in a meaningful way, engage in important conversations, and see themselves as capable readers and thinkers. Because of your support, my students can hold a physical copy of the novel in their hands, annotate their thinking, discuss important ideas with their classmates, and become fully immersed in a story that challenges the way they think about life and society.\r\nScythe is an especially valuable novel for high school students because it addresses complex questions that extend far beyond the pages of the book. The novel imagines a future where humanity has eliminated disease, poverty, war, and natural death. At first, this world may seem like a perfect society. However, the elimination of natural death creates a new problem: someone must decide who lives and who dies. The Scythedom is created to control the population through \"gleaning,\" forcing readers to consider difficult questions about morality, power, responsibility, justice, and human nature.\r\nThese themes give my students an opportunity to connect literature to real-world issues. Throughout the novel, students are asked to consider questions such as: Who should have the power to make life-or-death decisions? What makes someone worthy of authority? Can power corrupt even people who begin with good intentions? What responsibilities come with having power over others? These are challenging questions for 11th-grade students, but they are also questions that encourage students to develop the critical-thinking skills they will need beyond high school.\r\nThe novel also supports important literacy skills. As students read, they practice analyzing characterization, conflict, theme, symbolism, point of view, and author's purpose. They learn how to support their ideas with textual evidence and explain how specific details contribute to a larger theme. Most importantly, Scythe gives students a reason to read closely. They want to know what happens to the characters, but they also begin questioning why the characters make certain decisions and whether those decisions are right or wrong.\r\nYour donation is particularly meaningful because having individual copies allows students to participate in the reading experience together. Instead of relying solely on digital copies or sharing limited classroom materials, students can annotate their own books, mark important passages, record questions, and return to significant moments throughout the novel. This creates a stronger sense of ownership and encourages students to become active participants in their learning.\r\nScythe is also an excellent addition to my English III curriculum because it provides opportunities to connect literature across different time periods and genres. My students can compare the novel's ideas about power, fate, mortality, temptation, and responsibility with themes they encounter in other works, including The Odyssey. My art society students were able to open the boxes and check out all the fun materials first. They were really thrilled about the \"fancy\" Bristol paper and new pens! We played with the wooden manikins and posed and named them all before sketching them out from different angles. \r\n\r\nWe haven't used the sculptey clay and tools just yet but once I told the students those would be an upcoming project, they were more than excited to go home and start watching sculpting videos to get inspired before we start. \r\n\r\nI appreciate the kindness and generosity from you donors so much!
