Fidgets, stress balls, and other sensory items help students manage their bodies, stay focused, and take part in learning. A reward for a positive choice can also become a tool that helps a student keep making good choices.\r\n\r\nOver the next three months, we will help students become more independent by setting personal behavior goals, tracking their progress, earning and saving PBIS tickets, and celebrating their growth. We want them to know that success is not about being perfect. The liquid motion bubblers quickly became a favorite calming visual, while students also enjoyed the fidgets, sensory balls, Play-Doh, coloring materials, motivational wristbands, and noise-reducing earmuffs.\r\n\r\nOne of the most meaningful parts of this project is that students how to use the sensory tools. Rather than simply being given a tool, students are encouraged to identify what they need and independently choose a resource that can help them calm their bodies, organize their thoughts, and prepare to re-engage. This transforms each bag from a collection of sensory items into an opportunity to practice an important lifelong skill: self-regulation.\r\n\r\nThroughout the school year, I will continue using the Reset and Refocus Kits during individual and small-group counseling sessions and when students need additional support during challenging moments or transitions. Students will practice identifying their emotions, recognizing when they are becoming dysregulated, selecting an appropriate coping strategy, and determining when they are ready to return to learning.\r\n\r\nOur next step is to continue helping students move from \"I need help calming down\" to \"I know what helps me reset.\" As students become more familiar with the strategies, our goal is for them to require less adult prompting and become increasingly independent in managing their emotions and behaviors.\r\n\r\nYour donation has helped us create more than calming bags.
