We typically are only able to have one novel study in the 7th grade year, and this allowed us to have a second - very exciting - novel study. \r\n\r\nI have seen more student engagement this year than any previous year, and I believe that is due to the impact of this novel study. Students were excited and intrigued to read that book. We read Eleven, which is a historical fiction about a young boy that lived in New York during 9/11. \r\n\r\nAll of my students were deeply invested in the book, the characters, and the plot twist. This book helped me make reading fun for all of my student groups including my 504, Sped, and emergent bilingual students. I was able to get a translated copy from the author which meant EVERYONE got equal access and participation. \r\nStudents learned about symbolism, theme, characterization, empathy, and so much more while participating in this novel study. It grew into something so much bigger - in fact, every 7th grader in my school ended up reading this novel and I was able to secure a live conversation with the author, Tom Rogers. \r\n\r\nIn short, it was a beautiful experience as a teacher. At length, I believe this grant created life-long readers and critical thinkers.","fullyFundedDate":1715219976633,"projectUrl":"project/bringing-novel-studies-into-the-classroo/8377008/","projectTitle":"Bringing Novel Studies Into the Classroom","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Hooper","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-4_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8723767"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_13056","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":814,"numTeachers":62,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":18,"percentWhite":21,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":53,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"7 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"13.1:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_SMALL"},"inStateSupporters":81.3,"schoolId":13056,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Blocker Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Blocker Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/texas/texas-city-independent-school-district/blocker-middle-school/13056"}
