Your donations allowed us to create a true classroom library filled with varied and high interest titles. Now students can explore different genres, practice making inferences, analyze character motivations, and cite text evidence all within our own room. During shared reading and small group discussions, we pause to annotate passages and track themes, helping everyone strengthen critical thinking and close reading skills that go far beyond simply finishing a chapter.\r\n\r\nReading time has become one of the most vibrant parts of our day. Students browse the shelves, choose books that speak to them, and jot reflections in their inference journals before coming together for lively discussions. Several reluctant readers have discovered favorites and are now recommending titles to classmates, creating a peer driven culture of reading and conversation.\r\n\r\nThanks to your generosity, we now have a welcoming, student centered library space inside our classroom. This collection is not only improving comprehension and analysis but also inspiring a genuine love of reading that many students are experiencing for the first time. Your support has turned an empty corner into a doorway to imagination and lifelong literacy.","fullyFundedDate":1746852247882,"projectUrl":"project/chapter-three-the-stories-keep-coming/9331845/","projectTitle":"Chapter Three: the Stories Keep Coming","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Bernal","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9622006_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1722991883247","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9622006"},{"teacherId":9622006,"projectId":9206548,"letterContent":"When my students first saw the shelves stocked with deodorant, toothpaste, body wash, and other hygiene essentials, their reactions were a mix of surprise and relief. Several quietly asked if they could really take what they needed, and one student whispered that this was the first time in weeks they would not have to worry about sharing with siblings. These simple items, so easy to overlook, have given my students a new sense of dignity and comfort in their day.\r\n\r\nSince the project was funded, we have created a Dignity Station where students can discreetly pick up what they need before the first bell or during transitions, no questions asked. This privacy and accessibility mean that basic needs are met without stigma, allowing them to focus on learning instead of personal worries. I have already noticed improved confidence and participation as students come to class feeling clean, prepared, and respected.\r\n\r\nOur next step is to continue normalizing self care and supporting personal responsibility. Students are beginning a short reflective activity about how meeting their basic needs impacts their readiness to learn and interact with others. Your generosity has not only filled a cabinet with supplies, it has also fostered a classroom culture of care and respect that empowers students every day.","fullyFundedDate":1746783036811,"projectUrl":"project/dignity-in-every-day-meeting-students/9206548/","projectTitle":"Dignity in Every Day: Meeting Students’ Basic Needs","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Bernal","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9622006_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1722991883247","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9622006"},{"teacherId":9622006,"projectId":8906699,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generosity, my students now have access to a collection of diverse books that truly reflect their lives and identities. These new texts are helping us explore important skills such as making personal connections to literature, analyzing characters with greater empathy, and discussing social and cultural themes in ways that resonate with students. We are also using these books to practice critical thinking and deeper comprehension, as many of the stories prompt meaningful discussions about identity, resilience, and representation.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading time has become even more engaging and impactful. Students can often be found eagerly flipping through pages during independent reading time or excitedly sharing parts of their books with classmates. The room is full of curiosity and conversation, with students relating to the characters and experiences they see in these stories. Some students who were previously hesitant to read are now more motivated because they see themselves in the books, and that has made a world of difference.\r\n\r\nOne student in particular, who often struggled to stay engaged with reading, has been captivated by a graphic novel from our new collection. They now ask for extra reading time and have even begun recommending the book to peers. It's moments like these that show just how powerful representation can be. Thank you for helping to create these moments and for making such a lasting impact on our classroom community.","fullyFundedDate":1733259784254,"projectUrl":"project/books-that-speak-stories-for-every-stud/8906699/","projectTitle":"Books That Speak: Stories for Every Student","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Bernal","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9622006_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1722991883247","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9622006"},{"teacherId":9787419,"projectId":8849351,"letterContent":"Thank you Tommy's Express for donating to my project. The bean bag chair is used daily and we've set rules in place to take turns on it and the flexible seating helps fidgety students move in the classroom that doesn't distract others. \r\nThe lighting in the class lends for a more calm environment where students can work in peace and free of a blinding overhead light that can be less helpful in a class designed for students with disabilities. \r\nWith your help, the vision that I had for my classroom and for my students who work in it is being seen and valued.
