Each month, my 4th graders dive into a new chapter book that helps build skills like comprehension, inference, character analysis, and theme. We discuss what we read using guiding questions — sent home as bookmarks — to help students think deeply about the story before our meetings.\r\n\r\nDuring our meetings, we read together in small groups, sometimes listen to YouTube read-alouds, and sometimes I read to them. We talk about how the characters grow, what lessons they learn, and how the story connects to our own lives. Students love our creative activities like writing diary entries from a character's point of view, designing wanted posters, or making friendship bracelets inspired by the story.\r\n\r\nThese books give students a chance to experience different genres, develop confidence as readers, and share meaningful conversations with their peers.
