When I showed them the gardens, they could not believe that we were going to grow plants inside our classroom!\r\n\r\nDuring our first session, students learned about hydroponic gardening systems and the parts of the garden including the water tank, water filter, UV lights, water height measurement tool, sponges to become the medium for growing, and the baskets to suspend the plants in water. They were then able to work in groups to place seeds into the sponges and then into the garden system. Over the next several weeks, students excitedly waited for the seeds to sprout, and after Thanksgiving Break, they were able to see the first green leaves growing from their herbs. \r\n\r\nOnce the herbs started to grow more, I took clippings of each herb (parsely, basil, thyme) and let students touch and smell their leaves. They were able to take small clippings home to use in their cooking. Before the winter break, I pulled out some of the plants so that students could see the different parts of each plant (stem, leaves, and roots). We reviewed a plant's basic needs and why we did not need soil, but rather plant nutrients to grow a garden. \r\n\r\nNow that the herbs have grown, we will start to grow a few leafy greens to create our own class salad. I plan on having plants continuously growing throughout the rest of the school year, and let other grade levels take part in the STEM Lab Garden.","fullyFundedDate":1728947493774,"projectUrl":"project/growing-fun-with-hydroponic-gardens/8876916/","projectTitle":"Growing Fun With Hydroponic Gardens","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Ross","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp6253593_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1728924642061","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6253593"},{"teacherId":2516722,"projectId":6111171,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your kindness towards my students.
