The refillable notebooks, binders, dividers, and pencil cases give students a place to keep their work organized, while the pencils and erasers provide the tools they need for both schoolwork and creative projects.\r\n\r\nOne of the most meaningful parts of our classroom is helping students recognize that they are capable of success. When students have their own supplies and a place to keep their work, they can take greater ownership of their learning. The charcoal pencils also give students an opportunity to express themselves through drawing and sketching, which can be a valuable creative outlet during a challenging school day. In just one week, every book has already been read at least once—many of them multiple times—which is something I don't take lightly in a DAEP setting.\r\n\r\nGraphic novels play an important role in my classroom. They support literacy skills such as comprehension, sequencing, inference, and vocabulary development while also helping students build stamina and confidence as readers. For many of my students, traditional novels can feel intimidating, but graphic novels provide an accessible entry point that encourages them to keep turning pages and actually enjoy reading. Many reluctant readers who once avoided full-length novels are now completing stories and feeling proud of their accomplishments. Their reading comprehension is scaffolded by the accessibility of the highly visual graphic novels. Honestly, I feel the display you enabled me to create is not only beautiful, but the ONLY appropriate way to display something like the ten commandments in a classroom. \r\n\r\nI'll be honest: the new state law requiring the Ten Commandments in Texas public school classrooms has been incredibly frustrating, and it puts educators in a difficult position. Yet, because of your support, we were able to meet this requirement thoughtfully and inclusively, without making any student feel singled out or excluded! That is no small feat, and it wouldn't have been possible without you. \r\n\r\nYour willingness to see this as a worthwhile cause — and to invest your time and resources in it — means more than words can express. Thanks to you, our students now have a space that encourages reflection, respect, and understanding of multiple value systems, all while complying with a mandate that could have felt divisive. I especially love the way students can see that our various cultural value systems have certain threads in common. Certain values that transcend culture and religion.
