We created beautiful butterflies for our Holocaust unit using all of our supplies. \r\n In 1959, the butterfly took on new significance with the publication of a poem by Pavel Friedmann, a young Czech who wrote it while in the Terezin Concentration Camp and ultimately died in Auschwitz in 1944. In a few poignant lines, \"The Butterfly\" voiced the spirit of the 1.5 million children who perished in the Holocaust. \r\n To demonstrate this random and pervasive loss of life, teachers walked students through a special butterfly project. Students would receive the name of a child from the Holocaust era and then create a butterfly to commemorate that child and his or her life.\r\n\r\nFilling the rooms with beauty and color, the butterflies were suspended from the classroom ceiling. Over a period of time, seemingly at random, teachers would remove a butterfly to represent a child who had perished. Students would return to the classrooms day after day to see if \"their\" butterfly had survived or perished. \r\n To start our unit, our students had a gallery walk and picked a poem that touched them or that they had a connection to and then analyzed it. They were then tasked and used our supplies to create a butterfly that represented their child and poem . Students were so engaged and enjoyed telling us about each of their butterflies and how they chose to represent them on the butterfly. \r\nThank you again for all of our new supplies, it made this project stand out and help our students to create a beautiful butterfly. They love them.","fullyFundedDate":1763139417631,"projectUrl":"project/a-clean-slate-the-write-way-to-start/9468527/","projectTitle":"A Clean Slate, the \"Write\" Way to Start the Year!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Pavelock","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp124868_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1534188324775","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/124868"},{"teacherId":8571412,"projectId":9961084,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for supporting our classroom.
