These books bring history and adventure to life through gripping stories that hook even the most reluctant readers. Many students who didn't usually pick up a book have fallen in love with the series, eager to discover what happens next.\r\n\r\nReading has become an exciting event in our classroom, especially during \"First Chapter Friday,\" when I read the first chapter of a new I Survived book aloud to spark curiosity and build anticipation. This weekly tradition has inspired students to explore the books independently and share their excitement with classmates. Reading looks lively and joyful, full of eager faces and enthusiastic discussions about the stories and historical events.\r\n\r\nSome students who struggled with reading have found confidence and motivation through these books. They're now proud to read aloud, discuss characters, and connect with history in a real and personal way. These narrative nonfiction books bring history and real-world events to life through compelling stories that captivate my students' imaginations. For example, Mr. Ferris and His Wheel tells the true story of the inventor behind the famous Ferris wheel, helping students understand how real people and events shape our world, all while enjoying a well-crafted narrative.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom has become an exciting journey where students explore facts woven into stories, which helps build their comprehension and critical thinking skills. One of our favorite books, Balloons Over Broadway, is a highlight each year around Thanksgiving. It shares the story of the first Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and sparks enthusiasm for reading as students connect the story to a holiday tradition they love. These mentor texts don't just teach nonfiction—they inspire curiosity, deepen understanding, and encourage students to see nonfiction as engaging storytelling.\r\n\r\nI've noticed that many students, especially those who usually shy away from nonfiction, are eager to dive into these books. They're excited to share new facts they've learned and even create their own stories using the same narrative nonfiction style. Your support has truly transformed how my students experience reading nonfiction, and I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity to bring these stories into our classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1680190508501,"projectUrl":"project/mentor-texts-for-mrs-vs-classroom/7259692/","projectTitle":"Mentor Texts for Mrs. V's Classroom","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Vincent","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7909657_orig.jpg?crop=2316,2316,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1648476814875","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7909657"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_10736","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1048,"numTeachers":65,"percentFrplEligible":48,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":5,"percentWhite":68,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":18,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"4 - 6","studentTeacherRatio":"16.1:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"TOWN","ncesMetroType":"TOWN_FRINGE"},"inStateSupporters":91.1,"schoolId":10736,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about E.J.
