We started off by discussing shapes. We discussed organic shapes and geometric shapes. It was the perfect opportunity to have some cross curriculum by reviewing shapes for the upcoming math state test, such as prisms, pentagons, parallelograms, etc. \r\nAfter discussing all the shapes that affect us, we honed in on organic shapes and forms. This is where the river rocks came in. I let the students choose 3 river rocks (organic forms) and glue them to their mat board. Then then took the glue and made an organic design around the rocks. After that, they covered the glue with sand.\r\nThe project was then set aside to dry. The following week we took watered down tempera paint and dropped this paint (colors of their choosing) onto certain areas of their design. They then spread the paint and chose to either let the colors mix or keep them separate with their sand designs. We let them dry again and then took pictures with their masterpieces the following week. The students were incredibly proud of their designs. Thank you so much for making the huge project a possibility.","fullyFundedDate":1739312420940,"projectUrl":"project/river-rocks/8997099/","projectTitle":"River Rocks","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Lopez","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp5093006_orig.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1720963565427","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/5093006"},{"teacherId":5093006,"projectId":9029818,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for these basic supplies that have helped us create so many projects. We have been able to use crayons, markers, paint, and more. The kids love having so many options to work with.\r\nSecond and third graders enjoyed drawing landscapes with crayons, and then painting over them. Several classes enjoyed painting rainbows with the supplies. Younger kids are learning how to care for the supplies before using them so that they will last longer.\r\nYour kindness means so much to so many and we truly appreciate your donations.","fullyFundedDate":1736114362893,"projectUrl":"project/classroom-essentials-shipment-2025-01-0/9029818/","projectTitle":"Classroom Essentials Shipment: 2025-01-05","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Lopez","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp5093006_orig.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1720963565427","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/5093006"},{"teacherId":5093006,"projectId":8997365,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for donating supplies to all of my students for art centers. So many hands play with these games. You have made so many students smile. \r\nThe rubix cubes are so engaging, especially for the older kids. They love this higher level thinking, problem solving activity.\r\nThe younger kids really enjoy playing with the memory game. And I appreciate that the cards are super thick and will last a long time.\r\nThe brain game is so much fun! I am tempted to play it as well. The kids have to really practice patience to wait their turn for this one.\r\nThe stackable toy is a hit. All ages like this one. And I love that the material is hard to crack. That is very helpful when going through so many hands.\r\nThe paint is always a hit. Painting is a favorite activity for so many of the students.\r\nAnd the playdough is such a fun bonus! We don't get to do this very often because of the cost as well as the mess, but they were so excited when I pulled this out.\r\nYou have made my students so extremely happy! The students were so excited to see the supplies that were donated. They were especially excited to paint with two different kinds of paint and then to put their artwork into the mats.\r\n\r\nThe first day, we learned about the history of poinsettias and how they came to be a holiday tradition in America. We watched a short video on the legend of the poinsettia from Mexico. We then tore out pages from old books and sketched a poinsettia flower on it using a black crayon. We used the watercolors to paint our flowers. \r\n\r\nAfter letting them dry, we cut them out glued them onto some black paper that I fixed to the mats. Then we carefully took the end of a broken paintbrush and dipped it into the acrylic paint to put dots all over the flower's petals. The students were so excited, and patient, to add these details.\r\n\r\nThe students were so pleased with how their flowers turned out. They were so excited to show their parents and loved ones. Thank you so much for helping me bring so many smiles to their faces and for building their confidence.","fullyFundedDate":1733179959632,"projectUrl":"project/christmas-project/8979379/","projectTitle":"Christmas Project","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Lopez","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp5093006_orig.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1720963565427","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/5093006"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_134176","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":401,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":41,"percentAsian":9,"percentBlack":23,"percentWhite":22,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":40,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR District Weighted Average","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":100.0,"schoolId":134176,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Willie Melton Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Willie Melton Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/texas/lamar-consolidated-independent-school-district/willie-melton-elementary-school/134176"}
