These decodables have been a game-changer for our classroom. With these sets of books, students are able to access CHAPTER BOOKS that we read as a class, with partners, or students choose sometimes to read them independently! I have heard so many comments about how proud they are that they are reading FULL books and are able to do so on their own. This success has built confidence and experience with reading that feels fun and do-able. \r\n\r\nWe use them in class to explicitly teach expression and fluency as a class, and then in groups they re-read these stories using these new skills. They have also become more interested in trying new chapter books like The Magic Treehouse because of the books that have been bought. With the addition of new fiction and non-fiction titles, students are exploring a broader range of stories, learning from diverse characters, and developing important early literacy skills like making predictions, identifying story elements, and building vocabulary through read-alouds and independent reading.\r\n\r\nThese books don't stay on the shelves for long! Students and teachers are regularly checking them out, and students are asking for them by name. I've seen students light up when they recognize a title from the 2x2 list and beg to take it home. One kindergartner recently told me, \"This book makes me want to read every day!\" That excitement is exactly what I had hoped to inspire. I had them out in the back for students to check out for about a week before moving them into our prize cabinet for them to choose from as they earn them.
