A few students have taken on the responsibility of using a care checklist to help care for Sugar and Potato. They help feed them hay, salad, and dry food, change their water, and help keep their cage clean. Students use a reference sheet to guide them through their responsibilities, giving them the opportunity to practice independence, responsibility, and ownership.\r\nFor other students, visiting Sugar and Potato has become a special reward. They enjoy sitting with them, holding them, and gently petting them. For some students, this time with our guinea pigs is a meaningful treat after being recognized for their hard work or positive choices.\r\nMore importantly, Sugar and Potato are teaching our students about caring for another living thing. They are learning empathy, patience, responsibility, and the importance of meeting the needs of others. It has been incredibly rewarding for the adults in our classroom to see the positive impact these little animals have had on our students.\r\nWe are so thankful for your generosity and for giving our students this experience. The novel has made a significant impact on my students, not only in terms of their academic growth, but also in the conversations we are having about society, media, and the power of language.\r\n\r\nOrwell's themes of truth, surveillance, control, and autonomy have enabled my students to strengthen their critical thinking skills as well as allowed for close reading exercises/textual analysis. We have explored the novel's rich use of symbolism as well as the effects of propaganda and manipulation which we have layered into our classroom discussions. This has supported my/our curriculum's goals while encouraging students to be more thoughtful and conscientious of the world around them.\r\n\r\nI read 1984 aloud to my senior English class. The majority of my students are English Language Learners who struggle with the language. Hearing fluent reading modeled in real time helped them build confidence, understand pacing, and built greater comprehension. As a result, several of my English Language Learners who were once hesitant to engage with complex texts were not only able to follow along, but participated in class discussions and expressed that they felt truly connected to this remarkable piece of literature.\r\n\r\nThank you so much for providing us with this amazing resource that has made this learning experience possible. 1984 has opened doors for my students.
