Every day, students in our classroom take turns feeding the chickens, collecting eggs, watering the garden, and checking plant growth. These real-world tasks not only teach responsibility and routine but also provide sensory-friendly, calming experiences that help students regulate their emotions and engage meaningfully in their learning. One of our proudest moments was when a student who typically struggles with focus spent nearly 20 minutes gently tending to a tomato plan focsed, calm, and beaming with pride afterward.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the chicken coop and garden set up, their excitement was contagious. Some squealed, others clapped, and many immediately started asking questions about how to care for the animals and plants. Watching their reactions reminded me how essential it is to give students these kinds of enriching, real-world experiences especially for our learners who benefit most from structure, movement, and hands-on tasks.\r\n\r\nNow that the garden is growing and our chickens are settled, our next steps involve using this outdoor space for academic integration. We'll be measuring plant growth for math, journaling about changes in the coop for writing, and learning about lifecycles and sustainability in science. Your generosity has brought learning to life for our students—and we couldn't be more grateful. This project has allowed them to develop valuable life skills while also expressing themselves in new and meaningful ways.\r\n\r\nSkills and Lessons Learned\r\nThrough crocheting, students have learned more than just how to create scarves and decorative pieces—they've developed patience, perseverance, and problem-solving skills. When a stitch doesn't turn out as expected, they don't give up; instead, they learn to adjust, troubleshoot, and try again. This process has taught them resilience and the importance of practice in mastering any skill. Additionally, following crochet patterns has reinforced their mathematical reasoning, as they count stitches and recognize geometric patterns in their designs.\r\n\r\nWhat Crocheting Looks Like in the Library\r\nThe library has transformed into a space of focus and collaboration. Some students work quietly, enjoying the meditative rhythm of stitching, while others excitedly share their progress and help each other through tricky patterns. The sense of accomplishment when completing a project is priceless—students are genuinely proud to see their hard work become tangible and beautiful.","fullyFundedDate":1735931585510,"projectUrl":"project/woobling-in-middle-school/8830064/","projectTitle":"Woobling in Middle School","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Stewart","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3797080_orig.jpg?crop=779,779,x1653,y940&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1565465001239","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/3797080"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_11188","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":934,"numTeachers":70,"percentFrplEligible":80,"percentAsian":19,"percentBlack":23,"percentWhite":13,"percentIndigenous":1,"percentLatinx":37,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"13.3:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":66.7,"schoolId":11188,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Webb Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Webb Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/texas/garland-independent-school-district/webb-middle-school/11188"}
