Your generosity made a remarkable impact on both student learning and our classroom community.\r\n\r\nHaving their own copy of the novel gave every child the chance to fully engage with the text. Students were able to follow along independently, return to passages, and jot down notes—all of which made comprehension much stronger. The accessibility also opened the door to learning new vocabulary. Whenever we came across unfamiliar words, the students could quickly reference them in their books, discuss their meanings, and practice using them in conversation and writing.\r\n\r\nReading with their own copy also boosted fluency. Many students who once struggled with expression or pacing grew more confident and comfortable as readers. It was rewarding to see their excitement grow as they found their voice in the text.\r\nMost importantly, The Giver sparked rich, meaningful discussions. Because everyone had the same book, students could turn to exact passages to support their ideas. This skill—backing up their thinking with text evidence—will carry with them into future grades and beyond.\r\n\r\nYour gift provided more than just books; it created an opportunity for my students to think deeply, ask important questions, and share their voices. Thank you for your thoughtfulness and for believing in the power of reading to inspire young minds.","fullyFundedDate":1744222865286,"projectUrl":"project/the-magical-power-of-read-alouds-in-the/9237600/","projectTitle":"The Magical Power of Read Alouds in the Classroom","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Erwin","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9685563_orig.jpg?crop=1440,1440,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1726321295822","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9685563"},{"teacherId":8000140,"projectId":9218747,"letterContent":"Your generous donation enabled 3 classes of 5th graders to enjoy the classic story of the Giver by Lois Lowry. Teaching 21st-century students comes with all the advantages and fascinations of utilizing an evolving network of technological advances in a classroom. My kids have the world at their fingertips, and it is a beautiful thing. Each one of them has their own Chromebook, which allows them to explore and learn at individualized paces. Now, students can have a similar individualized experience with their own book copy. Having a book to read increases reading comprehension and expands vocabulary recognition. Since we have had a 1-to-1 book opportunity in my classroom, students can take notes on the book, ask text-dependent questions that trigger deeper thinking, and promote reading fluency, making my students more confident readers.\r\n\r\nIn my classroom, we all grab a copy of the book and sit on the floor. I read the book aloud so that all students can hear word pronunciations of challenging words and see reading fluency modeled. We read a set number of chapters each day, and then students take the book back to their seats and use it for numerous classroom activities. When we were reading Save Me A Seat, students used their books to create a plot mountain. They had to map out the story's events and determine where they fit on the plot mountain. Having a book allowed students to revisit the text to find specific, integral moments in the story and add them to their maps. Currently, we are reading Refugee and using our books to prepare for a Socratic Seminar. Students are learning to create their own text-dependent questions based on what they read and ask those questions to their peers. We focus on helping them think through the text and dissect certain parts of the text. Without each student having a book, this task would be impossible.\r\n\r\nSince receiving these books, I have seen an increase in classroom engagement. Several reluctant readers now ask me if we will read today if we do not begin the class with the read-aloud. I see students discussing the books outside of class and making connections between themselves and the characters. Student writing is thoughtful and engaging. I love hearing the requests from students to have more time with the book because they are still writing or sharing their thoughts. None of this would be possible without you. \r\n\r\nYou have helped create an enriching learning environment for my students, and I will always be grateful. Thank you so much for supporting my classroom!","fullyFundedDate":1726249900923,"projectUrl":"project/students-read-best-with-a-physical-book/8674900/","projectTitle":"Students Read Best With a Physical Book in Their Hands","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Rucker","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9688012_orig.jpg?crop=615,615,x0,y34&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1724012369902","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9688012"},{"teacherId":6513404,"projectId":8663182,"letterContent":"I can't thank you enough for the donations you made to provide my classes with a copy of each read aloud we will do this year.\r\n\r\n The engagement and thinking that went on with our first read aloud- Save Me A Seat, was thrilling to see.
