When the boxes of supplies arrived, they were immediately eager to dive right in - many had never even touched clay, and they were thrilled that they would get to create something permanent, solid, and entirely their own. Working with clay has helped them slow down, focus, problem-solve, and trust the creative process in ways that flat, paper projects never allowed.\r\nOne of our first projects was creating ceramic ornaments shaped like our state, each with a heart marking our city. As students rolled and prepped the clay, I saw that even my students who often struggle to stay engaged had become deeply focused, often encouraging each other and taking pride in their work. When we talked about about firing the pieces, students were fascinated to learn that kilns reach nearly 2,000 degrees and that glaze - like finely ground glass - melts and cools into a glassy surface. I had one student excitedly ask if a kiln was \"like a heavy-duty oven,\" and soon he and his friends buzzed with comparisons of \"baking\" the ornaments like cookies with icing. Watching their ornaments emerge colorful and unique filled them with awe and pride.\r\nThanks to you, this learning is continuing. Students are now eager to use leftover clay for personal creations and are beginning a legacy tile project that will become a permanent mural in our school - bringing art beyond the classroom walls. Your support has given the students in my classroom confidence, curiosity, and the belief that their artistic creativity matters. Thank you for giving them an experience they will remember long after this school year ends.","fullyFundedDate":1758844690811,"projectUrl":"project/firing-up-student-art-with-ceramics/9696928/","projectTitle":"Firing Up Student Art With Ceramics","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Mills","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9164076_orig.jpg?crop=720,720,x0,y120&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1691342981641","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9164076"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_11691","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":910,"numTeachers":62,"percentFrplEligible":48,"percentAsian":2,"percentBlack":2,"percentWhite":38,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":51,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"7 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"14.7:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":44.4,"schoolId":11691,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Flour Bluff Junior High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Flour Bluff Junior High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/texas/flour-bluff-independent-school-district/flour-bluff-junior-high-school/11691"}
