Because the materials were tactile and playful, students were immediately drawn to them and excited to participate during small group time. Another important benefit of the alphabet soup cans was the transfer of skills beyond small group time. Students began to recognize letters more quickly during reading and writing activities, and many showed increased confidence when attempting to spell simple words. The repeated exposure to letters in a fun and low-pressure setting helped reinforce concepts that students could then apply independently. Because the materials were game-based and hands-on, students were excited to participate rather than feeling overwhelmed or discouraged. Many of my students who previously struggled with phonics concepts became more willing to take risks, try new sounds, and participate in discussions during small groups.
