When I first passed them out, they got to choose which color they wanted. Then we spent some time decorating the outside. It was fun seeing all the different decorative styles, and the students enjoyed the creative down time.\r\n\r\nFrom then till the end of the year, we spent 5-8 minutes everyday at the start of class for \"journal time.\" I gave them the option to write or draw, but the rule was their pencils had to be moving the entire time. Many of my students who struggle with writing appreciated the freedom to draw as opposed to write. But you can see from the pictures, many others choose to write as well. \r\n\r\nIt was amazing to see how well the students responded to this. If I would forget to add this time to my slides, I always had a least 1 student who asked \"are we doing journals today?\" I even had a few students ask for an extra journal to take home with them since the original journals stayed in the classroom. On the last day of class, most of the students opted to take their journal home with them showing just how much they valued the small but mighty book. \r\n\r\nFrom an SEL standpoint, I saw benefits for so many of my kids, boys and girls alike. Having a space to process emotions and thoughts in a safe and productive way allowed there to be less classroom behavior issues overall. Thank you for giving my students and I this wonderful tool!","fullyFundedDate":1742936204903,"projectUrl":"project/journaling-journey-of-self-discovery/9205713/","projectTitle":"Journaling Journey of Self Discovery","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Pickrel Tyner","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-9_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9975017"},{"teacherId":9605654,"projectId":8518958,"letterContent":"When I discussed this project with my advisory class, I was genuinely overwhelmed by the amount of care and empathy they showed for their peers. The initiative to create Student Care Kits quickly gained momentum as boxes started arriving, filled with essential supplies. It was an exciting and suspenseful time, waiting for all the boxes to arrive before we could begin assembling the kits. In the meantime, the students took the initiative to gather enough bags to make the care kits once all the supplies were in our room.\r\n\r\nBringing the Kits Together\r\n\r\nMy advisory students, along with some others who volunteered, meticulously ensured that each care kit contained snacks, a meal item, hygiene supplies, and socks. Once the bags were categorized by male and female and neatly packed into boxes, the realization of the impact they were making truly hit them. Witnessing the students' reactions, seeing smiles bigger than ever before, was an overwhelmingly joyful experience for everyone involved.\r\n\r\nReaching More Students\r\n\r\nSince transitioning to teaching 8th grade, I became aware that there were many more students in need of the Student Care Kits—students I didn't know personally and couldn't reach alone. To address this, I partnered with our student support specialist to ensure that these essential supplies reached those who needed them most.\r\n\r\nThe Impact of Care Kits\r\n\r\nThe feedback from the students who received the care kits has been incredibly heartwarming. Some students expressed their happiness at receiving items like deodorant, which they couldn't afford at home. Others shared their appreciation for having access to food that was both enjoyable and filling.\r\n\r\nThese experiences highlight a broader impact: when students open up about their experiences, it encourages others to feel less scared or ashamed to ask for help. This openness fosters a supportive community where students feel comfortable seeking assistance when needed.\r\n\r\nReflecting on the Experience\r\n\r\nReflecting on this project, the most rewarding part has been witnessing the empathy and kindness fostered among students. The care kits not only provide tangible support but also help cultivate an environment where students are encouraged to support one another. This experience has shown me the power of community and the profound impact that small acts of kindness can have on individuals in need.\r\n\r\nBecause of your kindness all of this has been possible. Thank you so very much for helping all of us here at RAMS with your generosity.","fullyFundedDate":1727213117963,"projectUrl":"project/student-care-kits/8518958/","projectTitle":"Student Care Kits","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Ortiz","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9605654_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1721832133018","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9605654"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_126293","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1034,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":74,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":46,"percentWhite":14,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":32,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":78.9,"schoolId":126293,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Richard J Allie Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Richard J Allie Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/texas/crowley-independent-school-district/richard-j-allie-middle-school/126293"}
