Having these new resources has made SEL learning more engaging and has encouraged students to take ownership of their learning.\r\n\r\nThe students are also especially excited to begin podcasting once they finish learning and researching their SEL topics. They are looking forward to using their own voices to teach others about what they have learned and share positive messages with their peers. This has given them a meaningful purpose for reading, researching, writing, and speaking.\r\n\r\nThe coffee table and pillows have also created a comfortable and inviting workspace where students can read, collaborate, and work together. We had a record number of students attend our program this year, and many of them were there every day! \r\n\r\nAt each Story Time event, kids got to choose a bag of seven healthy snacks to take home. The kids were so excited to get their snacks, and the parents were happy too. Several mentioned that they appreciated the bonus treats because of the rising cost of groceries. At the beginning of the school year I had one family tell me that the snacks their kids received at Story Time lasted them all summer! \r\n\r\nOne of our students with a disability has been attending Story Time with his grandmother for years. He's headed to middle school next year, but she asked if he would still be able to attend Story Time even though he technically \"aged out.\" I told her that he is welcome until he doesn't want to be there any more, because no one ever ages out of quality family time together.\r\n\r\nYour generous support made all of this possible. In our 13 year history of the program we have never had such huge crowds, which gave us the opportunity to get more books into the hands of students. We ended each story time with a hands-on family project that was based on a book. For example, we read about seeds then planted our own seeds to take home, and we read about dogs then put on our own dog art show. Everyone had a great time, and it was wonderful seeing the families and kids work together on a project that was inspired by a story. \r\n\r\nWe also saw more students who wanted to read to the crowd than we've ever had in previous years. Some of our readers were current students and some were former students visiting to get community service hours. We even had a four year old student who read us the entire Pete the Cat book she had received at the previous Story Time. Her grandmother said she practiced the night before so she could read her new book to her friends. We had so many student readers that we ran over time several days, and everyone stayed late just to hear the stories. \r\n\r\nAll of this was possible because of your generous support. There are no words to express how grateful we all are that you chose to give to our Summer Story Time program. So far this school year we have made use of these math drawers daily. The students love having access to the math tools they need right away. One of the very first lessons we taught about place value, the students needed base ten blocks and they were able to stand up, walk to their drawer, grab what they needed and sit back down in a matter of seconds. Without these drawers, it would have taken me at least 5 minutes to find and hand out then collect the base ten blocks when we needed them. \r\n\r\nThe students are so very thankful to have this type of access to these materials. There have been some days where the lesson doesn't need tools from the drawers but they ask if they can get to them. They have also asked if they can access the materials in the drawers outside of the math lesson as well.
