Your donation has already brought smiles to students faces, and will continue to do so throughout the rest of the school year. \r\nI have extended my book club program this year to involve 5 different books. Last year, I did Harry Potter, Book 1, and Dog Man. This year, I brought back Harry Potter, Book 1, and added on Harry Potter, Book 2, Wings of Fire, Dragon Masters, and I Survived. The items purchased through this project have already rewarded several students with books for attendance. I am currently reading from the illustrated edition of Harry Potter , Book 2, and the students are loving seeing the artist's vision of the words on the page and it is opening up conversation on why it doesn't look exactly like the movie. The attendance winners for this book club will receive the next Harry Potter book, purchased through this donation, to encourage them to continue reading the series (as did the winner in book club 1). The next book clubs will follow the same pattern- the items funded with the project will not only reward students in our book clubs for reading, but also encourage them to continue reading after the book club ends. For some of my younger students, the objects purchased will encourage excitement in reading and reward good reading etiquette in our book club (bookmarks and stickers). \r\nI am truly excited to share the gifts you helped purchase, and of course, the gift of reading, with our students.","fullyFundedDate":1758811172186,"projectUrl":"project/books-for-book-clubs/9666635/","projectTitle":"Books for Book Clubs!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Zapata","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp2379707_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1530035136301","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/ipadsplease"},{"teacherId":10031476,"projectId":9677379,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generosity, these new books have already made a huge impact on our classroom. The variety of texts has also given us opportunities to talk about genres, vocabulary, and themes in a way that feels exciting and accessible for second graders.\r\n\r\nReading time in our classroom is now one of the most joyful parts of our day. Students spread out with their book bins, find cozy spots around the room, and dive into stories with real focus. We read together, we read in partners, and we spend time talking about what we notice and wonder. The room feels calm, engaged, and full of curiosity.\r\n\r\nSeveral students have been especially excited about the new books—they're choosing them during independent reading, sharing their favorite parts with classmates, and asking if they can take them home to continue reading. They practiced sequencing, using transition words, and writing clear, detailed instructions. Then, the best part—they followed their own writing to make (and enjoy!) their apple pies.\r\n\r\nThe room was full of laughter, cinnamon smells, and proud smiles as students realized how their writing could come to life. Many even asked if we could write more \"how-to\" pieces using other recipes or crafts.\r\n\r\nNext, we'll be building on these writing skills by creating procedural writing books, where students will choose their own topic to teach others how to do something. Students recently partnered with a buddy and read partner books. I set aside the new books for them to choose from and explained the books were donated. They were so happy, and it meant a lot that people who didn't know them would give towards a project that benefitted my class. The students clapped enthusiastically as I explained what and who the books were for! They spent about 25 minutes reading with another student; some students took turns reading pages, while others took turns reading the whole book aloud to their partner. One group of girls read the pages chorally (simultaneously). A short video is attached. \r\n\r\nIn my classroom, students listen to a read aloud for 10-15 minutes after lunch and recess. I select books that are in my classroom library, so they can get excited about reading the available books on their own. Students also have \"Read to Self\" time in the mornings and during the afternoon in Intervention. \r\n\r\nSeveral books in my classroom library were donated from a retired teacher. Many of the books I received were worn and well-loved, but they were also tattered and falling apart. I could tell they'd been read many times. Sometimes students were hesitant to read a book that was worn because they thought was missing pages or \"old.\" These new books replaced some of the exact worn out books, and some brought my library up to date with new authors and titles. \r\n\r\nOccasionally, I'll feature books on a special event day (like pajama day or before a holiday). I'll read the summary of the book or the inside flap to the class and show them pictures. There are plenty of books for students to choose, and they get to select one of the books. After 15 minutes of \"Read to Self\" time, they return the book to the shelf, and repeat the selection process again. Students love this special treat time to read books they're excited about.
