Learning about science begins with asking a question, and just the presence of the stream table spurred curiosity within our classroom. Students were curious what the table was and how it would be used, opening an opportunity for discussion about what is to come this school year. \r\n\r\nThe stream table is designed to simulate the process of the ways that water shapes Earth's surface. Using the stream table, students will observe the processes of weathering, erosion and deposition, all which are linked to the creation of various landforms. The first use of our stream table will be modeling the processes of erosion and deposition; students will get a first hand look at how water carries sediment to new locations and then deposits it in a new location. \r\n\r\nAnother important usage of our stream table will be the simulation of the formation of a delta. Although this is only my second year teaching 5th grade science, it is evident that delta formation is a difficult concept for students to understand. The ability to watch a delta formation come to life before their eyes will be paramount in their understanding of this particular landform. \r\n\r\nIn closing, I want to thank you again for your generous donation to our science classroom. I truly believe that, especially in science, students learn and retain much more when they are learning by doing. The gift of the stream table will make this a reality for our class this year.
