These books allow us to dive deeply into skills such as identifying theme, analyzing character growth, and making text-to-self connections—all critical parts of developing strong readers and thinkers. We've also been able to practice important strategies like citing text evidence, discussing author's craft, and exploring how literature reflects real-world feelings and challenges. Having whole-class sets has opened the door for us to experience these lessons collectively, making our conversations richer and more meaningful.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading now looks like a true community. Students gather with their books in hand, pausing to talk about powerful lines, share their thoughts in small groups, or ask questions during class discussions. There is an energy in the room when everyone is on the same page—literally and figuratively! These shared texts have created opportunities for us to slow down, reread, and think critically together, something that was hard to do before when we didn't all have access to the same materials.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite parts has been watching reluctant readers light up when they realize they can keep up with the story right alongside their peers. Several of my quieter students, who used to hesitate to share, have been raising their hands eagerly to point out character traits or predict what might happen next. Others have started bringing up the books at recess or in the lunchroom, showing me that the stories are sparking excitement beyond class time. These moments remind me how powerful it is to put books directly into kids' hands—and how your support has made that possible.","fullyFundedDate":1748372956725,"projectUrl":"project/books-that-build-readers/9364090/","projectTitle":"Books That Build Readers","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Carruth","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8423351_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1747469539380","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8423351"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_13195","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":649,"numTeachers":38,"percentFrplEligible":54,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":24,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":72,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"4 - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"17.1:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"TOWN","ncesMetroType":"TOWN_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":71.4,"schoolId":13195,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Underwood Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Underwood Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/texas/andrews-independent-school-district/underwood-elementary-school/13195"}
