One thing that really helped us settle in and begin creating our new class \"family\" was our daily whole group reading time. We laughed and cried with Opal as she navigated life through loss, loneliness, and the beginnings of cherished friendships. Students got to know each other better as they shared how they related to the characters from their own experiences. While being captivated by Winn-Dixie, we were able to study concepts the students will be using all year, including character changes, setting, problems/solutions, and causes and effects. \r\n\r\nDespite reading two chapters a day, it never felt like enough and when it was time to close the books each day, there was a chorus of groans throughout the classroom. We never wanted to stop reading!","fullyFundedDate":1754013875783,"projectUrl":"project/class-set-of-novels/9499190/","projectTitle":"Class Set of Novels","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Rogerson","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-8_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8370734"},{"teacherId":9007664,"projectId":9488073,"letterContent":"Wow! We are ten weeks into our school year, and we are on our third book as a class. The students have already fallen in love with Brian in Hatchet and The River, which you graciously provided for them. I am using these books as a class read aloud. We begin each class period by everyone opening their books and following along as I read to them. They are hooked! Every day when we stop reading, they beg for more. I believe we have accomplished the goal of putting books in the hands of students and getting them interested in reading for pleasure.\r\n\r\nWe are about a third of the way into our third book, which happens to be my all time favorite book: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. This book has a very special place in my heart. My late grandparents introduced me to the books while we were shopping for the newest release for their neighbor's birthday in the 90s. I read the book a few years later as part of a college class, and fell in love! My grandfather and Harry Potter share the same birthday. I have always associated Harry Potter with my grandparents, which is a connection I dearly love. That love comes through when sharing the story with my students.\r\n\r\nThe classes have truly enjoyed coming into class, picking up the book that is on their desk waiting for them, grabbing a pillow, or a sitting in a fun chair, and getting comfy while we read. I told them the readings were no strings attached, but THEY are bringing up the stories as we are discussing our skills for they. THEY are making the connections to plot structure, or character traits. THEY have been impacted by the stories so much that they are discussing them at recess, telling their friends that they need to read the book we are reading in class, and asking to read the next chapter in their spare time. \"Thank you so much for donating to our classroom. We really love reading the amazing stories and we're looking forward to reading more.\" - Mrs. Roggenbuck's Homeroom class","fullyFundedDate":1754231239034,"projectUrl":"project/adventures-in-reading/9488073/","projectTitle":"Adventures in Reading!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Roggenbuck","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9007664_orig.jpg?crop=2316,2316,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1685723198096","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9007664"},{"teacherId":7260081,"projectId":8748276,"letterContent":"My students have truly been enjoying our time during our science lessons with Generation Genius. Generation Genius provides lesson plans, activities, and videos that has helped make science and math more concrete. The videos show students examples of hands on learning that we are unable to do in the classroom in fun and engaging ways. The videos and lessons are so interesting and engaging and keeps them excited about learning. It truly brings our science standards to life using the fun and educational videos. My students have loved doing hands on activities after watching the videos and completing the lesson. Our students need as many resources as possible to keep up with all the new technology changes. Education is changing and moving to digital and online programs and this program is amazing! Having the right science and math supplements can bridge the gap between student needs and I see this happening everyday in my classroom.
