This simple strategy has had a powerful impact on the way students think about numbers. The structure of the grid helps students visually separate the ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands places, making it easier for them to see how each digit has a specific value depending on where it is located. Instead of trying to remember rules abstractly, students can physically organize numbers in a way that makes sense to them.\r\n\r\nUsing grid paper has also encouraged stronger mathematical reasoning and confidence. Students can clearly line up digits, check their work, and better understand operations such as addition and subtraction because the place-value alignment is consistent. Many students who previously struggled with messy handwriting or misaligned numbers are now demonstrating greater accuracy and independence. The consistent structure allows all learners to focus on the thinking behind the math rather than the frustration of keeping numbers straight.\r\n\r\nOverall, this approach has transformed our learning environment by making math more visual, organized, and accessible for every student. The use of grid paper has empowered students to clearly communicate their thinking and strengthened their understanding of number relationships. We are excited to continue using this strategy as we build deeper mathematical skills throughout the year.","fullyFundedDate":1757423264079,"projectUrl":"project/use-grid-paper-to-place-number-on-its-co/9440146/","projectTitle":"Use Grid Paper to Place Number on Its Corresponding Value","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Del Rosario","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-5_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10001868"},{"teacherId":10001868,"projectId":9345286,"letterContent":"We are so grateful for your generous donation of Play-Doh, clay, pencils, and erasers. \r\nThese resources have quickly become an important part of our classroom learning. They recently used their senses to better understand the physical properties of matter and used clay to compare and contrast both in science. The pencils and erasers have also been a wonderful support for daily writing and math work, giving students the confidence to try, revise, and improve without worrying about running out of supplies.\r\n\r\nWhen my students first saw the materials, their faces lit up with excitement and curiosity. \r\nUsing the new resources has had a tremendous impact; my students have gained confidence when erasing because there is no evidence of their mistakes, the paper stays clear, and there is no proof that they had to correct many times. The pencils don't break, and when sharpened, they are high-quality and don't damage the sharpener. The use of these types of pencils has created confidence in my students; therefore, they are writing stories to apply their knowledge to demonstrate how solids change when heat is applied. Manipulating clay and playdough for our lesson engages them to deepen their understanding of the states of matter.","fullyFundedDate":1747682009637,"projectUrl":"project/engaged-learning/9345286/","projectTitle":"Engaged learning","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Del Rosario","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-5_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10001868"},{"teacherId":7738511,"projectId":8376143,"letterContent":"On behalf of our entire school community at Lillian elementary, I want to extend our deepest gratitude for your generous donation of gymnastics equipment for our elementary scholars. As a bilingual first-grade teacher in Alvarado, Texas, I've often wished my students had more Spanish books available, so I was thrilled to discover that many of Mo Willems' books are translated into Spanish!\r\n\r\nOne of the reasons I love Mo Willems' work is the engaging and entertaining dialogue between characters like Piggie and Gerald. When I read these stories aloud, I switch tones to match each character's emotions, creating a mini play for the children—and they absolutely love it! What's even more amazing is seeing my students mimic this during independent reading, practicing intonation and gaining a deeper understanding of dialogue on their own.\r\n\r\nMy students were overjoyed to receive their very own books, especially since many of them have never had the chance to choose and purchase a book during our book fairs. The fun, colorful pencils they received made the experience even more special.\r\n\r\nThank you for giving my students the opportunity to feel valued, to know they deserve wonderful things, and to see that hard work truly pays off.
