When we first opened up the space to our students after it was fully unpacked and organized, they couldn't wait to get their hands on anything and everything. \r\n\r\nTheir latest cross-curricular project was about using the Engineering Design Process to identify a real world problem within our community and investigate the problem to determine potential solutions. They had small benchmarks in each of their core content classes to tackle different parts of the project; they explored environmental impacts and government policy in Social Studies, they outlined their design process and compared it to plot diagraming in ELAR, and they built prototype physical or digital models to present with their culminating product in Science. \r\n\r\nEvery time that I saw our students working in the Junk Room on their projects, I could see the wheels turning in their brains as they surveyed all of their options to determine which materials would be the best fit for their particular needs. Some students relied entirely on what was available within the space, whereas others brought additional materials from home to push their designs even further. \r\n\r\nThe end results were incredibly creative and diverse, and it was such a pleasure watching the students showcase their learning with physical models that they crafted themselves. And of course this is only the beginning! We have two more big projects in the works for next semester, and every time our students become stronger innovators and critical thinkers. We all are so excited to see what they come up with next, and the sky is the limit thanks to your contributions.","fullyFundedDate":1762370764593,"projectUrl":"project/more-junk-for-the-junk-room/9547167/","projectTitle":"More Junk for the Junk Room!","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Kane","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp2610662_orig.jpg?crop=884,884,x92,y119&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1754509134147","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/2610662"},{"teacherId":8484584,"projectId":9259640,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generous support, our classroom has been transformed by the addition of new technology that is making a real difference in how our students learn. While many of you may use technology daily for work or at home, in our classroom, it's become a dynamic tool for engagement, creativity, and deeper understanding. With access to interactive learning programs, digital collaboration tools, and multimedia resources, students are now able to explore topics in ways that were not possible before. Lessons have become more interactive, and students are taking more ownership of their learning, often moving at their own pace and showing increased confidence in tackling challenging material.\r\n\r\nWhat excites our students most about this new technology is how it brings learning to life. Whether it's using tablets to create digital art, engaging with science simulations, or participating in virtual field trips, the excitement is clear in their energy and enthusiasm. One student in particular, who previously struggled with focus and participation, has really come alive since we introduced these tools. He now takes the lead in group projects and even volunteers to help others learn how to use the technology—something we never expected to see so soon. Your donation has not only enriched our curriculum, but it's also opened new pathways for students who are discovering their potential in unexpected ways.","fullyFundedDate":1746787263335,"projectUrl":"project/bringing-the-color-alive/9259640/","projectTitle":"Bringing the Color Alive","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Stennis","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8484584_orig.jpg?crop=660,660,x0,y195&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1658093959243","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8484584"},{"teacherId":9100224,"projectId":8336119,"letterContent":"My students are thrilled to have their very own set of headphones. Now they are able to listen to the textbook in English or Spanish and learn the content simultaneously. This was a major convenience for me and now I'm the teacher that everyone on my hall comes to for headphones.\r\n\r\nBefore this project I had to request a set of headphones from our testing coordinator and that was a long process.
