Seeing the professional mats, command strips, and acrylic displays made them realize that their art deserves to be presented with the same care and attention as any gallery exhibition. Your contribution has brought new books into our classroom—books that are not only enriching our library shelves, but also opening doors for students to think more deeply, read more joyfully, and see themselves as growing readers. Many of you shared that you personally love to read, and I want to take a moment to explain how these new texts help us teach reading in ways that go far beyond turning pages.\r\n\r\nThese books introduce a range of meaningful literacy skills and lessons. With the diverse characters and engaging plots your donations have provided, students are learning to make inferences, analyze character motivations, track theme development, and identify how authors use language to create mood and meaning. The vivid storytelling also gives us opportunities to teach empathy—students learn to understand perspectives different from their own—and to strengthen their ability to discuss, debate, and support ideas with textual evidence. In short, these books help us teach students how to read thoughtfully, not just what to read.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is an active, collaborative experience. At different points in the week, you'll see students reading independently in cozy corners, meeting in small groups for book discussions, and gathering on the carpet for shared read-alouds. You might also see students jotting down notes on sticky tabs, sketching out story maps, or turning to a partner to share a moment that surprised them or challenged their thinking. Reading time is joyful, productive, noisy in the best way, and always full of discovery. The new books have added fresh energy to these routines—students race to be the next to check out certain titles, and our book talks have never been livelier.\r\n\r\nThere are a few students in particular who have shown remarkable excitement thanks to these new additions. One student who previously struggled to stay engaged during reading time has now found a series that speaks to his interests, and he proudly carries his book with him everywhere. Another student who reads well above grade level has been thrilled to have more challenging texts that push her thinking. A shy reader who rarely volunteered now raises her hand eagerly during discussions because she finally sees herself in a book's main character. These moments—big and small—are happening every day because of you.\r\n\r\nThank you for believing in our classroom and in the power of books. Your generosity has created a ripple effect of curiosity, confidence, and joy in reading, and we are truly grateful.","fullyFundedDate":1699406671503,"projectUrl":"project/a-shelf-is-a-home-for-books/7848001/","projectTitle":"A Shelf Is A Home For Books","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Yuen","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9280322_orig.png?crop=243,243,x0,y40&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1763346106403","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9280322"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_108617","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":737,"numTeachers":55,"percentFrplEligible":85,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":39,"percentWhite":2,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":52,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"1 - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"13.4:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":67.4,"schoolId":108617,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Cypresswood Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Cypresswood Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/texas/aldine-independent-school-district/cypresswood-elementary-school/108617"}
