These stations, equipped with USB ports and standard outlets, allow students to charge their phones, AirPods, Chromebooks, and personal laptops throughout the day.\r\n\r\nBefore receiving this project, many students struggled to keep their devices charged and ready for use in each class block. Since most of their coursework, research, and assignments depend on technology, a low battery often meant falling behind or missing important learning opportunities. Now, with the new charging stations placed throughout the room, students can stay engaged, productive, and prepared for all their classes—not just mine.\r\n\r\nThe Charge and Learn project has transformed our classroom into a more efficient and student-centered space. It has encouraged responsibility and collaboration, as students share charging access and take initiative to keep their devices ready. High school students often learn economic concepts best when they can experience them, and these games have given them the opportunity to apply financial literacy in a hands-on and engaging way. By incorporating board and card games into class, I've seen students not only reinforce their understanding of income, expenses, and financial decision-making, but also build teamwork and problem-solving skills in a low-pressure, fun environment.\r\n\r\nThe two most popular games so far have been Paycheck to Billionaire and The Game of Life Goals. Both provide opportunities for students to connect real-world money management to gameplay. In Paycheck to Billionaire, students quickly realized that financial success requires more than just collecting money. Every time a player passes \"start,\" they receive income, but that money is offset by expenses such as bills, taxes, and unexpected fees. This creates a realistic scenario where students see how quickly money can leave their hands if it is not managed carefully. They also face opportunities to invest in property, weigh risks, and manage setbacks caused by event cards.\r\n\r\nOne of my students, Tyler, summed it up well:\r\n\r\n\"The game paycheck to billionaire was very close to Monopoly, but it was more fun. Every time you passed start you got $500, but you had to do your payments and taxes taking away the money you got. One of the people playing got a 5-house place that took $2,000 if you landed on it. Everyone playing the game hit that owned property and became bankrupt. There are event cards the players can acquire and use either on themselves or other players. Some examples of the event card are natural disaster to downgrade other players' properties, baby fees that each time you pass start you pay $200, and upgrade cards that allow the player to upgrade without landing on the property.\"\r\n\r\nTyler's experience shows how the game builds a realistic picture of financial ups and downs. Students learn firsthand that while income is important, the ability to manage expenses, taxes, and investments determines long-term success. They also discover how sudden events—similar to real-life emergencies or opportunities—can disrupt financial plans. This makes abstract concepts like risk management, budgeting, and economic decision-making much more tangible.\r\n\r\nThe Game of Life Goals card game has been another favorite. In this game, students balance career choices, savings, lifestyle upgrades, and unexpected events. They see how their decisions affect their financial stability, teaching them about opportunity cost, delayed gratification, and the impact of choices on future outcomes. Several students commented that it felt like \"real life\" because they had to decide between immediate rewards and long-term benefits, which mirrors the economic trade-offs people face daily.\r\n\r\nAn added benefit of this project is that it has given my early finishers a productive and enjoyable way to extend their learning. Instead of sitting idle or becoming distracted, these students are actively practicing financial literacy in a way that feels like play. They are not only reinforcing what we cover in class, but also developing collaboration skills as they strategize, compete, and sometimes negotiate with peers.\r\n\r\nOverall, this project has been a tremendous resource. It has made financial literacy engaging, accessible, and relevant. Students are excited to play the games, and in the process, they are internalizing lessons about income, expenses, taxes, investing, property management, and risk. Most importantly, they are learning that financial decisions carry consequences—sometimes positive and sometimes negative—and that planning ahead is essential to financial success.\r\n\r\nBy combining fun and learning, Life, Luck & Loot: Financial Literacy with Games has sparked curiosity and motivation among my students. They walk away with not just knowledge, but also experiences that prepare them to think critically about money in their own futures. I am grateful for the opportunity to provide these resources in my classroom and look forward to continuing to use them as a powerful learning tool in the quarters to come.","fullyFundedDate":1752860711760,"projectUrl":"project/life-luck-loot-financial-literacy-wi/9246064/","projectTitle":"Life, Luck & Loot: Financial Literacy with Games","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Lori","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp6403633_orig.jpg?crop=1022,1022,x3268,y1504&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1620134550280","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6403633"},{"teacherId":6403633,"projectId":6730749,"letterContent":"The Looks Better in Color: Charts/Maps/Tables Project has made a vibrant difference in our classroom, and we are incredibly thankful for your support.
