The addition of The Pit Deluxe and Uno cards gave students a rewarding and engaging activity to participate in after completing their assignments. These games created a classroom environment where students could relax while still developing important real-world skills such as teamwork, strategy, decision-making, and communication.\r\n\r\nStudents worked together by learning the rules, encouraging one another, and practicing healthy competition in a respectful setting. During games of The Pit Deluxe, students had to think quickly, negotiate, and communicate effectively with classmates, while Uno encouraged problem-solving, patience, and social interaction. Having these supplies readily available helped students remain focused in class, minimized classroom disruptions, and encouraged healthy habits such as sanitizing shared spaces and caring for personal wellness.\r\n\r\nThis project also reinforced the importance of preparation, responsibility, and community support—concepts that connect directly to Business Economics and Personal Finance. As the high school's student international travel group leader, I selected puzzles featuring destinations connected to educational tours I have led for students over the past several years, including Venice, Edinburgh, Paris, and London. Primarily made up of high school seniors, the classes used the puzzles after completing daily assignments and projects, which naturally sparked conversations about travel experiences, culture, history, architecture, food, and traditions connected to each destination. Students became more curious about the world around them while hearing real stories and experiences tied to the locations represented in the puzzles.\r\n\r\nIn addition to promoting cultural awareness and global learning, the project strengthened valuable academic and life skills. As students worked together to complete each puzzle, they developed problem-solving abilities, patience, attention to detail, spatial reasoning, and teamwork skills. The activity encouraged communication, collaboration, and perseverance as students learned to work toward a shared goal. The puzzles also provided a positive and calming environment that helped students relieve stress, improve focus, and build relationships with classmates. Providing easy access to cough drops helped reduce unnecessary trips to the school nurse, minimizing missed instructional time and allowing students to quickly return their attention to learning. Working within a $2.5 million budget, students were challenged to make important financial decisions while considering expenses such as animal care, staffing, utilities, acreage requirements, and onsite facilities. Throughout the four-day project, students learned how quickly costs can accumulate and how businesses must carefully prioritize spending in order to remain financially sustainable. The activity also encouraged students to think critically about budgeting, resource allocation, planning, and the relationship between operating costs and long-term success.\r\n\r\nIn addition to strengthening their understanding of economics and personal finance principles, the project helped students develop valuable workplace and life skills. By collaborating in groups of 3–4, students practiced communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and decision-making while working toward a common goal. They learned how to delegate responsibilities, listen to different perspectives, and compromise when making financial and design choices for their zoo. While a few students were initially anxious about using the physical board game instead of a familiar online version, they quickly warmed up once they understood the gameplay. The materials have been especially valuable during recent internet issues, providing a reliable and engaging Plan B—or even Plan C—when technology wasn't cooperating. They've also been incredibly helpful in keeping students focused during the December \"senioritis blues,\" offering a fresh, fun way to reinforce lessons at a time when attention can be hard to maintain.\r\n\r\nOne memorable moment came when a group told me that the activity \"really brings economic concepts to life,\" as they naturally applied ideas like supply and demand, scarcity, and opportunity cost during gameplay. Their reactions when they first saw the materials ranged from curiosity to hesitation, but that quickly shifted to enthusiasm and friendly competition as they became more comfortable. By the end of the lesson, students who were unsure at first were fully engaged, laughing, trading, and strategizing—proving that these resources make economics not only understandable, but enjoyable.","fullyFundedDate":1764707846644,"projectUrl":"project/learning-economics-with-play-dough-and-c/9575981/","projectTitle":"Learning Economics with Play-Dough and Catan","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Lori","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp6403633_orig.jpg?crop=1022,1022,x3268,y1504&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1620134550280","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6403633"},{"teacherId":6403633,"projectId":9710719,"letterContent":"I want to sincerely thank you for supporting my classroom project, Charge and Learn.
