My students had never seen anything like these facial reconstruction kits. Each student team or individual was assigned the challenge of locating online or in media sources a cold case in which a deceased person was unidentified, or in which there was insufficient detail to build a reconstructed face. Many students were aware of various projects attempting to support and identify crime victims such as the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women's Project. We are not connected to those projects in any way, but we choose to educate ourselves about the good that can be gained from such projects and doing what we can to cross paths with those projects and help the missing and the murdered. Students researched a crime, studied the victim's skeletal structure, compared the actual victim photos to any known previous reconstructions, and then used the information gathered at the crime scene to reconstruct as best they could a face to represent the crime victim. Our class is largely made of Native American students, who are often violent crime victims, so there was a sense of urgency at getting the research right and to be as complete as possible. The limitations of such an exercise are artistic skill and time, as most of our students have had zero experience working with skulls and modelling clay. This project was well received by my students, who often spent extra time doing work when they had the time, because it got them out of a book and into real-world scenarios, and gave them an inside into the world of criminalistics and forensic anthropology.
