They track income and expenses weekly, discovering where their money actually goes—many are surprised to find they spend $40+ weekly on snacks and drinks. Essential Money Skills for Kids and Teens and The Accounting Game teach complex concepts through relatable stories; students learn about compound interest through lemonade stand scenarios and discover how businesses make (or lose) money. The QuickStudy accounting reference guides and Y.M.B.A. workbooks provide step-by-step instruction on creating financial statements, teaching them to read numbers like professionals. The wireless number pads make data entry accessible for all students, especially those sharing computers or working on laptops without numeric keypads.\r\n\r\nStudents personalize their budget planners with highlighters and tabs, treating them as roadmaps to their goals. During class, they huddle in groups comparing entries and challenging each other: \"You're spending HOW much on gas?\" The laminated reference sheets I created from the accounting guides hang at every workstation, allowing quick access to formulas and definitions. I often see students flipping through The Accounting Game during passing periods, genuinely interested in the story.\r\n\r\nOne student used her budget planner to track her paycheck spending for a month, discovering she could save $120 monthly by meal-prepping instead of buying lunch. She's now saving for college textbooks. Another student, planning to start a lawn care business, works through the Y.M.B.A. accounting workbook during study hall, determined to understand profit margins before investing in equipment. A first-generation college student created a detailed budget showing her parents how she'll manage expenses—your donation gave her the tools to negotiate her path forward.\r\nStudents are teaching family members what they've learned. Several have helped parents create budgets or review financial decisions using the skills from these books.\r\n\r\nThank you for believing in these students. This has made a huge impact in the lives of our students.\r\nThe Care Closet is now located in my classroom and stocked with essential hygiene items including deodorant, shampoo, toothbrushes, feminine products, and other personal care necessities. Students can access these items discreetly throughout the day, and I've watched the relief on their faces when they realize these resources are available without questions or judgment. One student quietly told me, \"I don't have to worry about that anymore,\" after finding what they needed. For many teenagers, having access to these basic items means they can come to school with confidence, focus on their studies, and participate fully in their education without the distraction or embarrassment of unmet basic needs.\r\nThe Care Closet has become more than just a resource—it's become a symbol that our students are cared for and supported. Moving forward, we're working to keep it consistently stocked and have created a system where students can request items they need anonymously. Several students have also asked how they can help restock the closet once they're in a position to give back. Your donation has not only provided immediate relief but has also shown our students that their community believes in them and wants them to succeed.","fullyFundedDate":1738256248763,"projectUrl":"project/clean-start-supporting-student-success/9020864/","projectTitle":"Clean Start: Supporting Student Success Through Essential Care","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Pressley","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-6_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/kristi-pressley"},{"teacherId":9552334,"projectId":9149559,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous contributions to my DonorsChoose project! Your generosity came at a perfect time—Teacher Appreciation Week—and helped us end the school year on a high note filled with positivity, reflection, and heartfelt connection.\r\n\r\nTo kick off the campaign, my students created cards for their favorite teachers and uplifting notes for friends and staff members. It was inspiring to watch them pour genuine kindness into each message. These small acts sparked big smiles and meaningful conversations throughout our school community.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials arrived—beautiful stationery, pens, stickers, and other supplies—my students were beyond excited. Many commented on how \"real\" and special their cards felt with the new materials. It gave them a sense of pride and ownership in spreading kindness.\r\n\r\nBecause we received the funding toward the end of the year, we were only able to launch the first phase of the campaign. The full impact of your gift will continue into the upcoming school year. We plan to expand the campaign into a year-long initiative, including a rotating \"Kindness Station,\" peer-to-peer encouragement weeks, and reflective writing projects that build on the foundation we started.\r\n\r\nThanks to you, this isn't just a one-time activity—it's the beginning of a cultural shift in our classroom and beyond.
