The books provided through I See Me in the Books I Read transformed the way my students saw themselves in literature. For many, it was the first time they encountered stories, families, and voices that felt familiar to their own lives. These texts opened the door to discussions about identity, family expectations, language, and belonging and helped students feel proud of their cultures and experiences.\r\n\r\nReading in my classroom became personal. Students leaned into our literature circles with genuine excitement, eager to share favorite lines or debate a character's choices. Even reluctant readers found connections; one student who rarely participated before said, \"It's like this book was written about me.\" The energy these books brought to class reshaped our reading community, encouraging empathy and deeper engagement across all our units.\r\n\r\nA few students, in particular, flourished with these new voices on the shelves. One bilingual student began journaling in both English and Spanish after reading The Poet X, inspired by the power of verse to capture her thoughts. Another student, who had often expressed that reading \"wasn't his thing,\" asked to borrow American Street to read over spring breakāand returned asking for more books like it. These moments reaffirmed how vital representation is to motivation and learning.","fullyFundedDate":1560966183675,"projectUrl":"project/i-see-me-in-the-books-i-read/4181983/","projectTitle":"I See Me in the Books I Read","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Hammond","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp2868694_orig.jpg?crop=2048,2048,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1761209460809","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/trish-hammond"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_6399","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":714,"numTeachers":43,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":21,"percentWhite":30,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":44,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"16.6:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":78.6,"schoolId":6399,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Saluda High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Saluda High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/south-carolina/saluda-county-school-district-1/saluda-high-school/6399"}
