Our new decodable readers are perfect for us, because they allow us to practice what we are learning in class and be successful while doing it! As with many classes across the country, it is unfortunate that some students are able to grasp learning to read as quickly as others. With these books, I am now able to incorporate the science of reading into my classroom and see the difference that it is making with my students. The books are colorful and keep my readers engaged as we practice. \r\nMy students are thankful to be able to books instead of boring worksheets! My \"Phunky Phonics Readers\" project was designed to help many of my struggling readers catch up to their peers by giving them access to decodable texts that target specific phonics skills. \r\n Every day I work with individual and small groups of students that need help with reading. In my small group I practice making words with specific phonics sounds and letter patterns. What I was lacking were materials that they could practice reading those words in. While it is important to be able to read words as you write them, it is even more important to be able to recognize those words in books and read fluently. Your donation and funding of my project did just that! Now, based on the groups or individuals I am working with, my students can feel successful as they read books with me and on their own. They love having colorful books they can actually read without embarrassment in front of their peers. The best part of this project is that there are many books that cover such a variety of phonic skills, and it will be useful all year long as students progress into harder concepts and texts. I have seen it help students with their development in educational and social skills. Also I am able to decrease the amount of time students spend in front of a screen. Being able to give students a fun way to review math skills we covered has shown to help build knowledge, encourage math conversations, and give them joy at the same time. Students are able to review skills in place value, addition, subtraction, time, money, and shapes using hands-on fun board games. These types of board games are good for students to improve on accuracy and speed of answering questions in each subject area. Already I have seen students who struggled with these skills at the beginning of the year are showing improvement and building confidence. Also if students aren't able to get a correct answer their peers talk with them about how to get to the correct answer. Students really enjoy the card games because they can be used for up to 6 different games. This gives students the opportunity to choose what game they want to play for their center time. Once they learned all the rules for each board game, then I gave them the choice to choose which one to play in their groups and again they enjoyed being able to choose which to play.\r\n\r\nStudents are benefiting not just academically, but socially as well from these centers. They are able to work on skills like learning to play fair, to be encouraging to others, and to solve disagreements among themselves. One of the biggest goals I had was for students to have less screen time and more hands-on opportunities. Not only was this goal met, but I have seen a significant change in my students' excitement about math games instead of being on the computer. Since having the new games, students look forward to math center time. Students have made comments to me like \"I love learning like this Mrs. Hair!\" and \"Yes, math centers are my favorite!\" I look forward to seeing this for many years to come in my classroom when using these centers again and again. Without our donors, I wouldn't be able to witness the growth and joy in my students.
