There is only so much I can do to make the rock cycle exciting. This year we decided that we'd like to have the kids smash open some geodes and look at crystals up close. A few weeks ago, as we were concluding our unit and talking about crystals, I took the whole class outside in the cold air with a bag of geodes and a few hammers. \r\n\r\nThe kids loved it. They were smashing rocks all over the pavement. Pieces of crystal would shoot across the ground and kids would dive to get them. Once we got back inside everyone was comparing crystals and checking out their new finds. It was a great way to end the unit.\r\n\r\nThank you for your generous donations that made this possible. The students really loved it.","fullyFundedDate":1758288237196,"projectUrl":"project/rockin-the-rock-cycle/9651796/","projectTitle":"Rockin' The Rock Cycle","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Morandi","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp5545786_orig.jpg?crop=1060,1060,x905,y1166&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1687373947242","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/5545786"},{"teacherId":5545786,"projectId":9253442,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous donations. In my class I hand out fake currency to get students participating in class. They can buy from my prize box, rent my chair, eat lunch in my classroom, or make slime.\r\n\r\nBy far, making slime is the most popular option. Student come to my classroom at the end of a study hall period. I take them in groups of 8 and provide all the materials for them to make slime in a variety of colors with foam beads, charms and glitter. With two 3D printers in my classroom we have been able to do so much. We've also incorporated them into my unit on Stream Morphology. Students are able to design and print dams to see their effect on the shape of a river. I was able to purchase needed supplies for our growing Dungeons and Dragons club. Students have been coming in record numbers to play the game with their friends on Fridays after school. It blows my mind that we have over 40 members this year. That is 40 students who choose to stay late on a Friday afternoon every week to do mental math, read and write, and have fun with their friends and teachers. Dungeons and Dragons is a great way for students to put their learning into real action that matters to them. We bought 14 copies of the Lorax with the funds provided. The Lorax, while childish and simple to read, has some very deep lessons on environmental responsibility. Most classrooms in the United States get about an hour of time dedicated to climate change each year. That's just not enough time. I use the Lorax to start a unit on environmental responsibility. \r\n\r\nThe students walk into my classroom to find all of my own children's Legos scattered across the floor. I repeatedly tell the students that although I made the mess, I refuse to clean it up. Then we read the Lorax together. I follow that up with a slideshow of philosophical questions about the book. There are questions like \"Can you cause harm to inanimate objects?\" and \"Who's responsibility is it to clean up someone else's mess?\" Usually by this time the students are starting to get the analogy of the Legos on the floor to the mess left by the Oncler.\r\n\r\nHaving copies of the books allows my students to cite the sources during our conversations. Having the books also allows me to make comparisons between the 1970; s cartoon and and the more recent movie.","fullyFundedDate":1744390279423,"projectUrl":"project/books-for-classroom-library-and-environm/9248974/","projectTitle":"Books for Classroom Library and Environmentalism Unit","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Morandi","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp5545786_orig.jpg?crop=1060,1060,x905,y1166&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1687373947242","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/5545786"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_91395","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":612,"numTeachers":45,"percentFrplEligible":7,"percentAsian":9,"percentBlack":1,"percentWhite":77,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":6,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"13.6:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":70.0,"schoolId":91395,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Archie R Cole Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Archie R Cole Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/rhode-island/east-greenwich-public-school-district/archie-r-cole-junior-high-school/91395"}
