Seeing their excitement over our new games and building materials has been such a wonderful reminder of how much the simplest things can mean to young children. Thanks to your generosity, our classroom now has Magna Blocks, additional magnetic building blocks, Tic Tac Toe, Don't Break the Ice, Trouble, and other fun materials that my students can enjoy together.\r\n\r\nWhen I first showed the students everything we received, they were beyond excited! There were lots of smiles, excited voices, and questions about when they would get to play with everything. Of course, the magnetic blocks were an immediate hit. It did not take long before my students were building towers, houses, castles, and all kinds of creations that only make sense in the wonderful imagination of a five-year-old! I love hearing them call me over to show me what they have made and listening as they proudly explain every little detail.\r\n\r\nWhat I love most about these materials is that my students think they are \"just playing,\" but I can see how much learning is actually happening. When they build with the magnetic blocks, they are experimenting, problem-solving, planning, and learning that sometimes their first idea does not work—and that is okay! I have watched a tower tumble down only to hear, \"I'm going to make it again!\" Those little moments of perseverance are so important in kindergarten.\r\n\r\nThe games have been just as exciting and have given us some wonderful opportunities to practice social skills. Learning how to play a game with friends is a big deal when you are five! My students are practicing taking turns, following directions, being patient, sharing materials, and learning how to be a good sport when things do not go their way. Don't Break the Ice has already brought plenty of excitement as everyone waits to see who will finally make the ice fall. Trouble gives them the chance to practice waiting for their turn and following the rules, and even a simple game of Tic Tac Toe gets them thinking ahead and interacting with one another.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite parts has been watching my students help each other. Once someone learns how to play a game, they are so proud to teach a friend. I hear them explaining the rules, reminding each other whose turn it is, and sometimes working through little disagreements on their own. As their teacher, those are the moments that make me smile. They are becoming more independent and learning how to be good friends and classmates without even realizing that they are practicing important skills.\r\n\r\nThese materials have also helped me get to know my students in different ways. During our academic lessons, I see one side of them, but during play, I often see something completely different. A student who is normally quiet might suddenly become the leader of a huge building project. A child who sometimes has difficulty waiting during a lesson may sit patiently while waiting for a turn in a game. I get to see their creativity, personalities, problem-solving skills, and friendships grow right in front of me.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, we will continue using these materials for both fun and learning. I am excited to begin adding simple challenges to our building time. I might ask the students to build the tallest tower they can, create something using a certain shape, make a repeating pattern, or work with a partner to build something together. As they become more comfortable with the games, I also hope to see them become increasingly independent in setting them up, explaining the rules to friends, and solving small problems together.\r\n\r\nAs a kindergarten teacher, I know how important play is. My students work hard every day learning letters, sounds, numbers, writing, and so many other new skills. They also need time to be five—to build, laugh, play games, use their imaginations, and enjoy being with their friends. Thanks to you, they now have even more opportunities to do exactly that.\r\n\r\nYour donations did so much more than put new toys and games into our classroom. You gave my students opportunities to create, cooperate, problem-solve, build friendships, practice patience, and experience the joy of learning through play.
