It has already made a difference in simple but meaningful moments, like a student grabbing a granola bar at the start of class and then fully participating, or another quietly taking a pair of gloves before heading out at the end of the day. These small actions have removed barriers and allowed students to stay present and engaged in our lessons.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the space, their reactions were a mix of surprise and gratitude. Some were excited and curious, while others were more reserved, but I noticed right away how many students felt a sense of relief knowing the items were there if they needed them. What stood out most was how respectfully they treated the space and one another. In a low-income school district like ours, these resources help create a classroom environment where students feel comfortable, supported, and ready to learn.\r\n\r\nWe have been using the markers during several class activities, especially when it came to decorating our door for Black History Month to honor all of the African American historical figures who did something \"first\". Recently, my students worked on creating visual responses to the literature we are studying, using the markers to highlight literary devices, symbols, and key quotations. The cushioned seats have also been a HUGE hit! They have helped make our classroom feel more welcoming and flexible, allowing students to choose comfortable spaces when we move into discussion groups or independent work time. The snacks have been especially appreciated as well. For many students, having a quick snack during longer class periods helps them stay focused and engaged. The boy who encouraged me to add snacks to the donation list is extremely grateful to have something to snack on in the mornings. All of these things impact their learning in ways larger than we can either comprehend. When our students aren't feeling their best - full, calm and clean - they are unable to fully engage with their teachers, peers, and classwork in meaningful, long-lasting ways.\r\n\r\nWhen I first received my project and unpacked it, students were stopping in to ask for things they needed all day, as they usually do. They have come to learn that my office is a resource for them, somewhere they can go where they are safe, not judged, and can get the things that they need. They were able to see all of the new materials that were available to them in their care closet, in my sensory bins and \"take what you need\" areas, and snacks if they are feeling hungry. On the first day of receiving my project, I was able to make a care package for a girl to take home who is struggling with ongoing food insecurity.
