I created a small, organized area where students can independently access snacks, hygiene items, and warmth essentials without having to ask. It has already made a difference in simple but meaningful moments, like a student grabbing a granola bar at the start of class and then fully participating, or another quietly taking a pair of gloves before heading out at the end of the day. These small actions have removed barriers and allowed students to stay present and engaged in our lessons.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the space, their reactions were a mix of surprise and gratitude. Some were excited and curious, while others were more reserved, but I noticed right away how many students felt a sense of relief knowing the items were there if they needed them. What stood out most was how respectfully they treated the space and one another. There's an unspoken understanding that this is here to support everyone, and that sense of care has strengthened our classroom community in a really special way.\r\n\r\nAs we move forward, my students are continuing to build their confidence and communication skills in Spanish through collaborative activities, conversations, and real-world connections. With their basic needs more consistently met, they are more focused, willing to participate, and open to taking risks in their learning. This project has helped create an environment where students feel both supported and empowered, and that carries into everything we do in the classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1768961341911,"projectUrl":"project/warmth-care-and-hunger-a-safe-support/10043923/","projectTitle":"Warmth, Care, and Hunger: A Safe Support Space for Students","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Anderson","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-2_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10413383"},{"teacherId":10413638,"projectId":10053525,"letterContent":"I am writing on behalf of our middle school community to express our heartfelt gratitude for your thoughtful and generous contributions. Your donation of markers, cushioned seats, hair supplies, snacks, and so much more has made a meaningful difference for my students. In a low-income school district like ours, these resources help create a classroom environment where students feel comfortable, supported, and ready to learn.\r\n\r\nWe have been using the markers during several class activities, especially when it came to decorating our door for Black History Month to honor all of the African American historical figures who did something \"first\". Recently, my students worked on creating visual responses to the literature we are studying, using the markers to highlight literary devices, symbols, and key quotations. The cushioned seats have also been a HUGE hit! They have helped make our classroom feel more welcoming and flexible, allowing students to choose comfortable spaces when we move into discussion groups or independent work time. The snacks have been especially appreciated as well. For many students, having a quick snack during longer class periods helps them stay focused and engaged. The boy who encouraged me to add snacks to the donation list is extremely grateful to have something to snack on in the mornings. Thank you also for the generous donation of hair ties and hair brushes. These simple items help students quickly feel comfortable and prepared for the day, allowing them to focus more fully on learning. \r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the materials, they were genuinely excited and grateful. Several students immediately asked where everything came from, and they were amazed to hear that people they had never met cared enough to support their learning. It was a great reminder for them that there are people beyond our school who believe in their success.\r\n\r\nYour kindness has made our classroom a more supportive and engaging place to learn. They love grabbing a book and settling into the comfortable seating to read. It has created a more relaxed and inviting environment that encourages them to spend more time with their books.\r\n\r\nThe candy was also a wonderful treat and a fun surprise for the students. The food, drinks, and personal care items you provided are used daily and intentionally. We've created a small \"care station\" where students can quietly grab a snack, a bottle of water, or a needed hygiene item without drawing attention to themselves. When students first saw the materials, many were surprised and deeply grateful. It was meaningful for them to know someone they've never met cares about their well-being.\r\n\r\nYour support has helped remove barriers that too often stand in the way of learning. Instead of worrying about hunger, thirst, or personal needs, students are better able to concentrate, collaborate, and participate. I've noticed improved focus during lessons, more willingness to engage in discussions, and a greater sense of ease in the room. \r\n\r\nAs we move forward, we will continue integrating this foundation of care into our daily routines and ongoing projects. This project has reinforced a powerful message: they are valued, respected, and worthy of care. The snacks and treats are aiding many of our students who may go without necessary food for nourishment. This can look like a lot of different things: a girl who needs a tampon, someone who hasn't eaten all weekend, or a student who is too anxious to go to class and needs a way to calm down. All of these things impact their learning in ways larger than we can either comprehend. When our students aren't feeling their best - full, calm and clean - they are unable to fully engage with their teachers, peers, and classwork in meaningful, long-lasting ways.\r\n\r\nWhen I first received my project and unpacked it, students were stopping in to ask for things they needed all day, as they usually do. They have come to learn that my office is a resource for them, somewhere they can go where they are safe, not judged, and can get the things that they need. They were able to see all of the new materials that were available to them in their care closet, in my sensory bins and \"take what you need\" areas, and snacks if they are feeling hungry. On the first day of receiving my project, I was able to make a care package for a girl to take home who is struggling with ongoing food insecurity.
