We usually do a portion of our lesson together as a whole group, completing a routine of activities that students are familiar with, including book exploration time, a story, and song. After this whole-group time, students complete an independent activity related to our story of the week. Because of the varying ability levels in the mixed-level classes, some students complete these independent activities quite quickly while others take longer, leaving some students with nothing to do as they wait for their peers to finish. These task bins are useful in that it gives the early finishers something to do that's on their ability level and engaging to them.
