Many of the new resources are already in full swing, allowing our lab to run smoothly and safely every day. During a recent ecology activity simulating fish populations, students \"fished\" for goldfish in a pond, and they collected data on fish populations over generations.\r\nFor a future chemistry activity, students will use the cleaning wipes and nitrile gloves to safely conduct messy experiments involving cornstarch and alka-seltzer, and the large periodic table poster will serve as a daily visual anchor when we dive into our chemistry units. The Play-Doh will allow students to build interactive 3D models of tectonic plate boundaries. Everything from the glue sticks and tape has helped us stay organized, while the box fans keep our space cool and comfortable on hot days.\r\nWhen the students first saw the boxes of supplies arrive, they were very excited to see what was inside because it gave them a peek into what activities and labs we would do next. The jolly ranchers quickly became a favorite addition, where students eagerly \"shout out\" and celebrate classmates who help them learn, and that student is awarded a candy. It is always hard for me to ask for help and I usually just end up buying everything I need for my classroom myself. We continued using the calculators we had because it was one thing I could not afford myself.\r\n\r\nPrior to this project being funded my students were having to use basic four function calculators. Half the time they didn't work right and they were not equipped for the kind of math my students do as 7th graders. My students have been so excited to have something nice to use. Something that works. And something that can actually help calculate the level of math that we do. \r\n\r\nMany of my students don't have calculators of their own. Most are used to using only basic ones on cell phones. We spend time throughout the year learning how to use them as a tool. We also talk about when it is appropriate to use them. \r\n\r\nBecause of your generosity I will be able to have this wonderful tool for the rest of my career and hundreds of students will benefit from this. They love grabbing my the books and talking about how they relate to the characters in the pages. Also with so many different kinds of levels all my students are able to find something they like and can read.\r\nI have one student who found the book \"the Only Black Girl in Town\". She was so excited to show me and tell me that SHE is the only Black girl in town. She felt so empowered and seen even just by the cover of this book. She then proceeded to tell me that I am the only white girl in town. Which is also true and hilarious.
