Our preschool students, ages 3 to 6, are using these new resources daily during play-based learning activities designed to support language, listening, and social development. Many of our students have hearing differences that put them at risk for delays in communication and play skills, and these materials allow us to address those needs in joyful, meaningful ways. One favorite activity combines listening and play: students hear a sound and respond by placing an ice-cream scoop into the matching circle. Through games like this, children practice identifying sounds, counting, taking turns, sharing, and using new words, signs, or gestures to communicate. When the materials were first introduced, students were excited and eager to explore. We saw immediate engagement, smiles, and peer interaction as children invited one another to join in play and learning.\r\n\r\nAs we move forward, these resources will continue to support our current lessons by strengthening early listening, language, and play skills. Students are learning to listen for sounds, follow simple directions, count during play, and respond to auditory cues through what we call \"play audiology\"—hearing a sound and taking an action. These experiences help children build the foundation for speech, language, and social interaction while making learning feel fun and successful. Your generosity is helping our students develop the skills they need to communicate, connect with others, and prepare for future learning in kindergarten and beyond. The children were absolutely thrilled when the new toys arrived! The excitement was immediate as they discovered the toy bears, the colorful wooden birthday cake, and the engaging set of board books. These simple yet powerful materials have already sparked so much joy, curiosity, and learning for every child in our program.\r\n\r\nOne of the most heartwarming moments was watching the older children proudly show the younger ones how to use the toys. They carefully demonstrated how to stack the blocks, balance the pieces, and squeeze the little toy mouse, all while laughing together. Several children began making the \"ee\" sound as they played, turning a simple game into an opportunity to practice listening and spoken language skills. For children with cochlear implants and hearing aids, these moments are invaluable. Play becomes a bridge to communication, and your support has given us more ways to create those opportunities each day.\r\n\r\nThe board books have also been a wonderful addition to our daily routine. During story time, the children eagerly gather around, waiting for their turn to turn the pages or point to pictures. What makes this activity so engaging is the way they combine sign language with spoken words to share what they see. A child might point to a picture of a dog, sign \"dog,\" and then say the word out loud, reinforcing their understanding in multiple ways. \r\n\r\nThe Melissa & Doug wooden birthday cake is opportunity to celebrate birthdays! The children take turns placing the candles, singing \"Happy Birthday,\" and pretending to blow them out. This playful ritual encourages breath support, which is so important for speech development, and it also gives children practice with the sounds and rhythm of language. Beyond the language benefits, the birthday cake sparks imaginative play. Children invent their own stories—sometimes celebrating a real friend's birthday, sometimes imagining that it's their teddy bear's special day. \r\n\r\nYour support is truly making a difference. These toys are more than just classroom materials—they are tools for building language, confidence, and friendships. Every giggle, every new word, every shared story is a reflection of the kindness you have shown. We are deeply grateful for your generosity and for believing in the potential of every child.","fullyFundedDate":1746491382321,"projectUrl":"project/listen-play-learn-sign-for-children-d/9295833/","projectTitle":"Listen, Play, Learn, Sign for Children Deaf/ Hard of Hearing","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Gilley","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7857507_orig.jpg?crop=272,272,x0,y15&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1745958692766","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7857507"},{"teacherId":9924594,"projectId":9454909,"letterContent":"Thank you for your generous donation supporting our Nursery Rhyme book project for Deaf and hard of hearing students.
