Unfortunately, the science kits were unavailable. So, I asked my students what they thought we should do with the generous monetary donations that our class had received. They decided that we could help \"grow\" our classroom library by using the funds to order science themed books. We took it one step further and and the students scrolled through hundreds of books available to order, to find books focused on climate change. This is something they feel is having an affected on their lives in a real way, as they live in the PNW and deal with very real fire seasons each year. \r\nWith your incredible generosities, our class was able to order about 20 books that discuss climate change from a scientific stand point, novels about high school students dealing with real issues in their communities, and books that offer hope and solutions for the every day person. \r\nOur alternative education program is brand new to our district and was offered very few funds to get our classrooms set up for the school year. But, your donations have helped us create a classroom that is not lacking in any way and helped my students thrive as they complete their first semester at our junior high. A talisman to be carried in the pocket, there when needed. \r\nWe will continue to paint the remaining rocks over the course of the new semester, but at a student's request. We are reading the novel, \"The House on Mango Street,\" and I wanted to have the students investigate how they see themselves in our society, as well as how they believe they are perceived. A self-portrait felt like the right jumping off point. \r\nWhen our materials arrived, students opened the boxes of supplies and helped with organizing everything on our giant table that holds all their supplies. These are items that they can access without needing to ask for permission. I loved seeing how their eyes lit up as they saw the table become crowded with supplies that had been generously donated by people like you! I could feel their excitement and appreciation. \r\nToday, we began to work on our self-portraits using the supplies you helped us acquire. Tomorrow we will be adding color and discussion, through short journal prompts, how we feel about our own perceptions of ourselves and how we are affected by the perceptions of others.\r\nThank you so much for helping to bring my students together to form a community that will support each other over the course of the school year!","fullyFundedDate":1753891882945,"projectUrl":"project/essentials-for-success/9476463/","projectTitle":"Essentials for Success!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Miske","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10005620_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1745638284079","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10005620"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_129851","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":190,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":65,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":77,"percentIndigenous":1,"percentLatinx":12,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_SMALL"},"inStateSupporters":37.5,"schoolId":129851,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Gpflex School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Gpflex School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/oregon/grants-pass-school-district-7/gpflex-school/129851"}
