Some first grade students shared some times when they have been scared and decided to try being brave. \r\n\r\nThen I paired up students with classmates they might not normally choose to work with and sent them to put together the little wooden puzzles. When they finished one puzzle, they would switch places with another student pair and put together another puzzle. Most students completed three different puzzles. This gave students the chance to move around and work together. Some hadn't had a lot of experience with puzzles. \r\n\r\nI talked with each pair explaining how each classmate was a piece of the puzzle, and how every puzzle piece is needed to complete the puzzle. The books have been incredibly fun and have supported several classroom projects.\r\nWe just finished reading \"Third Grade Angels,\" and the kids used that read-aloud time to fill in their bookmarks and earn tickets to an EMS game! It was such an exciting experience. I also loved using the book \"A Letter From Your Teacher: On the First Day of School\" to create a project called \"A Letter for My Teacher: What I Want You to Know.\" This turned into something truly moving and impactful, changing how I engage with the students and how they see themselves in our classroom. It opened my eyes as their teacher to always assume positive intent.\r\nWe also used \"Just Ask!: Be Different, Be Brave, Be You\" to inspire an art project where students thought about something they loved about themselves, something that made them proud. They chose a part of themselves, took a picture, and explained why it was special. This activity created awareness about self-identity and the importance of being brave and true to oneself.\r\nThe Smiley Face Magnetic Reward Jar has created an environment of mutual respect, encouragement, and teamwork. The kids have set goals and work toward them as a unit, looking for the positives in one another and recognizing each other's strengths.
