These books have allowed students to practice close reading, rhetorical analysis, and evidence-based discussion while engaging with real-world issues of justice, race, and compassion. As they analyze Bryan Stevenson's use of narrative, case studies, and appeals to ethos, pathos, and logos, students are strengthening the same critical reading and writing skills required for college-level work and the AP exam—while also learning how language can be used as a tool for advocacy and change.\r\n\r\nReading Just Mercy in our classroom has been deeply collaborative and student-centered. Students annotate actively, participate in Socratic seminars, and write analytical and argumentative responses that connect Stevenson's claims to contemporary issues in the justice system. Many students who are usually hesitant to speak have found their voices during discussions, particularly when examining moral complexity and the power of empathy. The durable hardcover copies have also helped students treat the text with care, knowing it will serve future classes as well.\r\n\r\nSeveral students have shared that this is the first nonfiction book that truly felt \"personal\" to them. They have expressed anger, hope, and reflection as they read Walter McMillian's story, and many have continued discussions beyond the classroom. Your support has not only strengthened academic skills but has also helped students see reading as a way to better understand the world and their place in it. Thank you for making such a lasting impact on my students and our school community.","fullyFundedDate":1748981046787,"projectUrl":"project/just-mercy-a-story-of-justice-and-redem/9104579/","projectTitle":"Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Headrick","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8308766_orig.jpg?crop=612,612,x0,y53&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1643929960502","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/j-headrick"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_68027","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":417,"numTeachers":21,"percentFrplEligible":37,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":57,"percentIndigenous":16,"percentLatinx":6,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"19.9:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_FRINGE"},"inStateSupporters":60.0,"schoolId":68027,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Verdigris High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Verdigris High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/oklahoma/verdigris-school-district/verdigris-high-school/68027"}
