We each tried to lift the contents of the package yet it was just too heavy to pick up. Children's guesses included paint, a bird house, books, new crayons and blocks. After all guesses were in, the children were thrilled to find an extensive set of new magnetic tiles to add to our light and shadow area. \r\nThe children free explored the building materials for a few weeks. Evidence of emerging skills became apparent. Sorting, patterning, organizing and teamwork were all becoming part of the work of pre-k. Discovering, observing, experimenting and collaborative efforts were just part of working in the light and shadow area.\r\nAs studies emerged in the classroom, the children began to apply what they learned by demonstrating their knowledge through the tiles and by combing other loose parts found in the area to create structures. An interest in museums led to creating a magnetic tile museum with mirrors. The museum was extended to reach out into other areas of the classroom. Discovering local businesses in the area around our school led to building store fronts found in our neighborhood using the tiles. Nearby skyscrapers were represented. After several attempts to build up, the children discovered various methods to build upward to achieve steady skyscrapers. Patterning and extending the patterns through the reflection of tiles with mirrors brought fascination and delight. It was evident, their work was representative of more complex use of materials after adding the magnetic tiles. Half the year is now in the past and I can only imagine what new insights the children will discover as they continue their explorations. We are so appreciative to have the tiles as a new addition to our light and shadow area. The long-handled garden tools, child-sized watering cans, succulent tool kits, heavy-duty gardening set, and outdoor brushes have transformed the way students explore and care for our school garden. One of the first activities we did was a \"garden stewardship day,\" where each grade took responsibility for a part of the space. Students used the rakes and shovels to loosen soil, the brushes to clean off muddy surfaces, and the watering cans to hydrate our growing beds. Watching them work together with tools that truly fit their hands was incredible—they moved with pride, confidence, and purpose.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the materials, the excitement was immediate. Several students rushed to pick up the long-handled tools and said, \"These are real!\" Others hovered over the tiny succulent kits, amazed that they now had tools small enough for delicate work. Their reactions made it clear that these weren't just supplies—they were an invitation to take ownership of their learning and their outdoor environment. The tools helped them see themselves not just as students, but as gardeners, caretakers, and scientists.\r\n\r\nWith these materials, our next steps include maintaining our raised beds through winter and preparing soil for spring planting. Students will continue to observe changes in the garden, document their findings in nature journals, and use the tools for upcoming lessons on plant structures, erosion, and engineering in nature. Your generosity has given them the resources to explore, experiment, and grow with their whole selves. Your contributions arrived at a time when they were truly needed. In my classroom, we faced a pressing challenge: we needed better storage solutions for our laptops and books to create an organized and inviting learning environment.\r\n\r\nThe book racks I initially received were quite flimsy, barely able to hold a modest collection of books, leaving us with clutter and disarray. With your generous donation, I was thrilled to enhance our storage, allowing me to showcase a broader selection of books on our shelves. The joy on my students' faces was priceless; several exclaimed, \"We have new books!\" when, in reality, it was just that I could now display a richer variety of titles for their exploration.\r\n\r\nAdditionally, we were relying on a rack to store our laptops, but it was teetering dangerously and becoming an unsafe risk for the students. Thanks to your thoughtful donation, we were able to replace it with a sturdy and reliable storage solution, ensuring that our classroom is now not only safer but also more conducive to learning.\r\n\r\nOnce again, thank you for making such a positive impact on our classroom and the lives of my students!
