Their task was to choose a great author and create a portrait. Most of the students were pretty terrified by this task when we began. They don't get to choose to be in the class, and several let me know that they never would have chosen to do an art class. So being asked to create a portrait was a tall order.\r\n The class began early with sketching and learning general proportions, and it was great to see that many students had some good skills. So we did some copying of famous portraits. We worked from life. Finally it was time to build the final portrait. \r\n Each student chose their author. A written proposal was assigned. This proposal described the plans for their unique portrait and included information on size, medium and any unique compositional elements. \r\n After the proposal was approved, they began on their portrait in their chosen medium. It was a delight to see the work build, and we held a critique to see all the portraits together after the due date. Our school has a massive art show at the end of the year, and amongst the nearly two thousand pieces of artwork, the portraits were a real gem. The frames that you provided made them spectacular, and the students loved learning to put their work into them and get them displayed.","fullyFundedDate":1745328119383,"projectUrl":"project/framing-9th-grade-art-portraits/9143320/","projectTitle":"Framing 9th Grade Art Portraits","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Pope","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-5_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9935908"},{"teacherId":8826352,"projectId":9138104,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for supporting TCA with microscopes. Unboxing day was so exciting. As I put the students into groups you could feel their anticipation. One by one they opened the boxes and slid out the styrophome kit. Muffled gasps and squeals were heard as they took their first looks at the microscope. We looked at all the parts and the lenses. They set up the microscopes while a few students went around to put batteries in. \r\n\r\nThen they were ready to turn on the microscopes and look at their first slide. These scopes came with a box of prepared and unprepared slides. They learned how to focus the machine as one group after another looked with a thrill at a world they had never seen before. They saw details and wonders they had never thought about. Why was there a hole on the fly leg where the hair grew? Why are the cells of an onion skin colored red and shaped like bricks? Since we were in the middle of our Astronomy unit, we were immediately able to pull out experiments and visuals to enhance our study. Using the biographies further enriched our study. When we took a field trip to the Discovery Lab, several elements were familiar due to our in-class experimentation with the science tubs.
