I previously had old boards that couldn't really be utilized due to the marker never coming off and leaving the writing behind no matter how much you cleaned it. The new ones work so well and leave none of that mess! They are also bigger which is a huge plus! I'm slowly starting to add these items in my classroom. I've already put up my neon sign \"We Can Do Hard Things\". This is something that a friend of mine had in her classroom and it means a lot to me and a couple other teachers in my school to see it. It's a positive reminder for my students as well as the employees that we can accomplish things even if it's hard. I've also put up the checkered mat and it just send positive vibes. My students love the neat colors! I also had to replace one of the items since it was out of stock. I changed it to a lamp that melts candles. Such an amazing way to keep our room smelling fresh (especially after recess)! :) The students kept coming in saying how good it smelled. These changes just make it cozy and inviting. It has helped reading groups run smoothly and boost student success. \r\n\r\nMy kiddos were SO excited when they saw this table. They love the \"feel\" of the dry erase table top. They say it's so smooth! I don't know how many times I heard \"I love this table Ms. Iams!\" They really enjoyed getting to write on the table too. They thought it was so cool! The sky blue color also goes so well with my cabinet colors which I love! \r\n\r\nIt has been amazing to fit so many kids at the table to really practice the skills that we have learned in class. Now that I'm able to have more kids at a time my small groups go by quickly but productively. My classroom feels so cozy and inviting and I get so many compliments from parents and students and staff members on how they could just stay in my room all day!\r\n The plastic storage bins are used to hold all of the manipulatives and center time toys, the pendant light was used above the sink in my classroom to make it a little brighter so that they can see to wash their little hands. The rolling cart is used to hold water bottles and lunch boxes so that they aren't just thrown all around the room. The rolling chair is for my aide to be able to sit comfortably while helping students at their tables and the crisscross chair is for my small groups table so that I can sit low enough to the ground to be on the same level as my students. I wish that I would have had my camera open when I explained this project to my kiddos. It would have been an awesome moment to share just to show you how truly thrilled they were to hear they could take home these books. My students are so excited to earn their classroom money and to spend it. I have been having students asking me if they can take home books before this got funded and I unfortunately had to tell them no because if they didn't get returned then my classroom library would suffer. The news that I was able to send books home with my kiddos as a job well done was music to my ears. I'm so excited that I get to take it a step further and show them that working hard gets you amazing rewards, responsibility, and math skills that they will need in the future. Real world examples are so important for young learners. These new stories help my students grow in their love of literature. They also improve reading fluency and give them fun examples of friendship like in the frog and toad books. Student access to books is such an important role.\r\nWe do a lot of reading in first grade. We do whole group where we learn different skills, we practice what we've previously learned, and we read our daily stories in small groups to practice and build confidence. Students also have independent time to read things like their library books. I know that the students are very thankful for this project as well as myself. We are using these materials to dive deeper in to science and to understand more in depth why things happen the way they do. \r\n\r\nWe were able to do a couple of experiments during our holiday festivities. One of the activities was putting vinegar into an empty water bottle. I then put baking soda in the balloon. By dumping the baking soda into the vinegar it blew up the balloon. We made predictions on if we thought the mixture was going to blow it up or not. Most students thought that it would. It then turned into them thinking that the balloon would explode which thankfully it did not. I was also able to do another one for the other first grade class. This experiment opened the door to explain that these two chemicals combined creates a carbon dioxide gas that expands and fills the balloon. The students loved the experiment and all wanted to take our inflated balloon home. \r\nAnother thing we did was make hot chocolate. Of course Ms. Iams brought enough for everyone to enjoy a cup. It made for a festive treat. We used some of the cups to enjoy our hot cocoa in. We talked about how we needed hot water because it breaks down the water faster. Cold water does not have as much energy so it takes longer to break down those molecules and it leaves us with all the lumps and chunky pieces. Yuck! The kids enjoyed it all and I am excited to keep helping them grow with these hands on materials that we have been provided.
