Just this week, I have given out 4 composition notebooks, a few pencils, a few folders and a binder. Everything went to students who did not have their required supplies by the deadline. When they came to me, they were very quiet in mentioning they could not get their supplies. I went to the supply cabinet, pulled what they need. No embarrassment, no questions, no reprimand for not being prepared, just smiles and quick \"thank you\"s. What a blessing for me to have on hand and also for the students who were without. Whether they could have afforded the materials or not was irrelevant because I had what they needed in the moment.\r\nAs a teacher, we always ride the line of teaching responsibility to students and wanting to meet their needs so learning can happen. Students are still human and lose things. As an adult, I lose things sometimes. It's wonderful knowing we have a cabinet full of \"forgotten items\" to help us get through the day.\r\nThe students who really need help with supplies, are genuinely grateful when their need is met. The look of relief on their faces shows they have one less thing to worry about. Stories like The Count of Monte Cristo take students to a different time and place, completely different than their own. The language of the book and the complex characters give them a glimpse into a world unknown to them otherwise.\r\nFahrenheit 451 gives the insight to what the world could like when people lose their right to knowledge. This is an excellent way to convince them their studies are important and books are a good. It also helps them understand the deep need for human interaction and what the overuse of technology can do. Having full sets of new books that are not tattered and falling apart is an amazing gift that will keep on giving for years to come. Students have been so excited to come in and try new art mediums. When I told them we would be painting with water colors, they asked everyday, \"Are we painting today?\" or \"Is it painting day yet?\". When the day arrived they were thrilled to walk in and see plastic covering the floors. The joy they had sitting close to their friends was could be felt in the room. We recreated Van Gogh's Irises using the chalk pastels and then took them outside to spray them. They had so much fun blending with their fingers and really getting into their piece. Now, I get questions everyday about using the clay. We will be sculpting when we move into contemporary and modern art. \r\nFor seventh and eighth graders, studying art and people cultures might seem boring without the hands-on activities to accompany the lessons. These opportunities to create something with their own hands and knowing many of these methods were used by the great artists they learn about has impacted the depth of knowledge in our classroom. Applying the elements of art to their own work has helped to solidify some of the lessons students learn in our room. The students learned so much from how to take care of the product, to that the humidity could cause issues with the cement to the fact that some were made to complex designs that it just did not work. This was an amazing project and taught so many different things. My students will continue to complete creative assignments to show their understanding of the concepts taught in class. I have a large bulletin board in my classroom where these will be displayed.
