Giving my students the chance to let their creativity out by being able to work with their hands has been such a beneficial opportunity for them. This especially enhanced by allowing them to fidget and learn more about emotions with the help of the funded sensory bottles.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials came in, many of my students have never heard of wiggle seats and were instantly intrigued with them. The ability to fidget through movement was a revelation to many of them and they were excited at the chance at the continued use of these resources in my office. Upon opening the STEM tiles and feeling sensory bottles, my students were also interested in the use of them. Due to the different stimuli in each bottle, my students drew connections between the emotion with how each fluid moved which was enlightening to hear their interpretations. Additionally, the STEM tiles brought many of my students back to their childhood and gave them a chance to build creatively and problem solve in real time. \r\n\r\nNow that the materials have been integrated into my room, I will continue to encourage my students to keep thinking critically and creatively. Also, highlighting how tools such as wiggle seats and sensory bottles are a great way to increase their focus when working on tasks and making connections to tough feelings when they come up. As a result of this project, I was able to make my school counseling office into a calm, serene space where my students have the chance to regulate themselves effectively. Being able to rely on the soft lighting only instead of the fluorescent overhead lights has made a big difference in how my students have utilized my office space. \r\n\r\nUpon setting up the floor lamps and hanging up the string lights, my students were in awe of the change of my room upon first use. I heard a myriad of comments such as \"how nice\" it made the room or other comments on how \"calming and chill\" the room has transformed into as a result. Paired with my calming corner, this has become a hub where my students have been able to effectively take short breaks throughout the day and have then been able to get back to class in a much better state.\r\n\r\nWith the new atmosphere, I am excited to see how my students continue to come to my office with the knowledge that is is a calm and safe space just for them. With this, I will continue to offer coping skill learning opportunities to compliment the low stress space where students can learn new tricks to add into their mental health toolboxes. Having wellness, feminine hygiene, and school focused materials available for students to grab at any time has allowed a sense of ease to fall over our student body. Many students have to face a unique set of challenges that they come into our building with and now worrying about basic necessities can be something that they can drop from the weight they might be carrying. \r\n\r\nWhen the resources began to arrive, my students were thrilled at the idea of being able to stock our Wellness Cart themselves. While I provided some of the containers to help keep the materials organized, my students were thoughtful and particular about how the cart was to be set up. As a school counselor, one of my biggest goals is to provide my students with a welcoming and safe environment where everyone can feel comfortable coming into. With this new addition that the students have a hand in keeping stocked, they have voiced a sense of accomplishment and joy that comes with supporting one another in the building in this way. \r\n\r\nTo help aid my students with continuing this project, I will help with the supplying of materials when needed and even give my students a chance to voice what they think would be helpful and useful for them to add onto the cart. Already, my students have created a plan with one another on when the cart should be restocked and have taken it under their wings with care. Continuing to perpetuate kindness and highlighting the importance of community within our school will be the overarching message that will continued to be broadcast and practiced with the care of our Wellness Cart. As a result of receiving these resources, I was able to start the process of teaching my students the connection between physical health and mental health. During times of elevated feelings and emotions, I am able to reach for our yoga mats, yoga balls, and guided books to facilitate sessions of how to intentionally move to regulate ourselves. In these times, I am able to expose my students to new coping skills, breathing methods, and an opportunity to decompress.\r\n\r\nWhen my students unboxed the materials for the first time, there were mixed reactions which is normal for a new topic or idea. Some have had experience with yoga and voiced their excitement for the opportunity to practice in our safe space. Others were a bit hesitant as they have never taken part in anything like this before, but ended up being open minded to try it out. When we went through some yoga poses and examples of how to breathe through the tough emotions, I received a lot of feedback where my students were thankful for the opportunity to explore and looked forward to doing more sessions in the future during the school year.\r\n\r\nAs the school year progresses, I am excited to keep holding this space and time for my students to explore how yoga and practicing mindfulness can continue to benefit them. With yoga as a basis, I will continue to introduce coping skills and expand their knowledge of how movement can benefit their mental well-being and overall wellness. The soft seating and pillows allow my students to find comfort when their day seems to be unmanageable. \r\n\r\nUpon unboxing the bean bag chair, pillows, and calming posters, my students were in awe at the implementation of the corner itself. Once I explained the purpose, my students voiced gratitude for a space where they would be able to let their guard down and decompress throughout the day. It was also heart warming to see my students practice the calming strategies and breathing patterns shown on the posters that were hung up for their use and others around the room that encourage healthy habits.\r\n\r\nWith the new space, I am excited to see my students feel more comfortable with coming to school with an area where they can regulate themselves if needed throughout the day. Since putting these fidget toys out, my students are able to direct their energy into different types of stimuli that allow them to focus better on our conversations and put them more at ease.\r\n\r\nOnce the materials arrived, I was so happy to see the wonder on their faces at the new types of fidgets that they might not have had experience with before. I had a range of reactions from my students including gasps of delight to excitement in being able to experience the fidgets for themselves. It has been such a joy to see how each student interacts with the different fidgets and learning what they like on a personal level. \r\n\r\nAs we move further into the school year with these new items, I am continually encouraged to help my students explore what coping skills work best for them.
