When the students first saw the ukuleles, the atmosphere in the classroom shifted immediately; they were overjoyed. That initial excitement has transformed into a genuine desire to learn, and they now ask to play the instruments at every opportunity. It is deeply moving to observe the sense of ownership and pride they display simply by holding the ukuleles correctly and treating them with care.\r\n\r\nWe are integrating these instruments into our curriculum in a way that promotes unity and cooperation. For example, our Kindergarteners are already successfully accessing the C major chord. We utilize the ukuleles in singing games where we rotate roles: some students engage in body percussion or rhythmic parts, while others accompany them on the strings. This rotation ensures equity in access and teaches us how to make music together as a community. Meanwhile, our 5th graders are advancing to more complex chords, mastering G, D, Am, and F.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, we are focused on bridging the classroom with the community. My next goal is to fully incorporate these ukuleles into our music programs so students can share their progress with their families. By supporting this project, you have not just provided instruments; you have created a common ground where students of all ages can find success and joy through music. Thank you for making this possible.","fullyFundedDate":1759452666961,"projectUrl":"project/strings-of-joy-ukuleles-for-grades-35/9732547/","projectTitle":"Strings of Joy: Ukuleles for Grades 3–5","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Swartout","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10270427_orig.jpg?crop=1815,1815,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1758300313469","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10270427"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_85452","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":355,"numTeachers":21,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":3,"percentBlack":12,"percentWhite":71,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":2,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"16.9:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":80.0,"schoolId":85452,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Walls Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Walls Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/ohio/kent-city-school-district/walls-elementary-school/85452"}
